About the Role

We’re growing our Intelligent Automation team to build the next generation of internal automations that power HubSpot’s employee experience. As a Senior Automation Platform Engineer, you’ll design and deliver complex automations using Workato, connecting critical internal systems across Finance, Legal, and Employee Tech.

You’ll be part of our Automation Center of Excellence (CoE) — a team that enables hundreds of internal “Citizen Developers” to safely build and scale automations. This isn’t a traditional full-stack software engineering role, but it does require strong technical fluency and the ability to extend Workato with code when needed.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and deliver end-to-end automations and integrations across internal systems using Workato (recipes, Callable Recipes, job control, monitoring, and error handling).

  • Build and secure automation services using the Workato API Platform.

  • Extend Workato capabilities by developing custom connectors with Ruby (Workato SDK).

  • Write simple Java utility code to expose bulk API endpoints for our internal HubSpot API.

  • Optimize automations for efficiency and scalability — minimizing task utilization and maximizing reusability.

  • Collaborate with and support our Citizen Developer community, reviewing complex recipes and ensuring best practices for security, scale, and governance.

  • Contribute to our CoE enablement and governance, creating reusable patterns, documentation, and guardrails that help hundreds of builders succeed.

What You’ll Bring

  • Proven experience building production-grade automations in Workato or another iPaaS platform (Boomi, MuleSoft, Zapier, Make, or n8n).

  • Strong understanding of APIs (HTTP, JSON, pagination, rate limits) and authentication (OAuth 2.0, JWT).

  • Ability to extend Workato connectors using Ruby and build simple Java or Python components when needed.

  • A mindset for efficiency, scalability, and reusability in automation design.

  • Strong collaboration and documentation habits — you leave behind patterns others can adopt.

  • Experience mentoring or supporting non-technical builders (Citizen Developers) is a plus.

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with SQL/ETL concepts, cloud services, and secrets management.

  • Experience building or governing automation platforms at scale.

  • Background in process automation, workflow orchestration, or internal tools development.

What Success Looks Like (First 90–180 Days)

  • Deliver 2–3 impactful automations using Workato API Platform and Callable Recipes, complete with clear runbooks and monitoring.

  • Publish or extend 1–2 custom connectors (Ruby/Workato SDK) and a bulk API endpoint in Java.

  • Author guardrails or playbooks that improve efficiency and reduce rework for the Citizen Developer community.

Why You’ll Love It Here

You’ll join a team that values learning, autonomy, and practical problem-solving over buzzwords. If you’re passionate about building meaningful automations that make work better for thousands of people — even if you don’t check every box — we’d love to hear from you
