Where and how you can work

Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have choice in where and how you work. We are seeking an experienced Security Builder to join our Canva Detection and Response team as a Staff Security Engineer. This is a leading senior individual contributor role, where you will play a pivotal role in shaping the architecture, strategic direction and maturity of Canva’s Detection and Response capabilities. You will bring a combination of skills and experience across security detection and response tooling and infrastructure architecture, design, delivery and incident response process. You will deliver innovative and scalable security solutions yourself as an individual, and also as a mentor of other security builders. You’ll also help foster a culture where we work with empathy, humility, and generosity - especially when the pressure is on. At the moment, this role is focused on

• Owning and delivering against a strategic architecture and roadmap for Canva’s Detection and Response Team

• Identifying and delivering improved security response tooling and capabilities across areas that may include: Case Management, Automation, SOAR, SIEM, Detection, Forensics and Malware Analysis.

• Evangelising and leading the adoption and integration of GenAI Workflows to raise the efficiency and scalability of the Detection and Response team’s operations.

• Leading engineering excellence across the Detection and Response team’s tooling and capability program through individual delivery and by mentoring other engineers.

• Acting as a technical leader working across security teams to deliver joint goals for Detection and Response.

• Assisting your team in interviewing and hiring other talented security engineers.

• Mentoring and supporting the growth of your colleagues in your areas of expertise.

You’re probably a match if

• Experience in owning and successfully delivering against long term strategic roadmaps for Security Detection and Response team tooling and capabilities.

• Hands on experience in the development of scalable security automation, case management, detection and response tooling, capabilities and workflows.

• Demonstrated ability to navigate engineering decisions, especially in 'Build vs Buy' scenarios, assessing third-party systems for partnerships, and effective vendor management to align with business objectives.

• Proficiency in modern programming languages (Golang, Python, or Java preferred) for crafting secure software.

• Strong project management skills, with a history of leading projects from start to finish, effectively collaborating with various stakeholders, and guiding security teams.

• Excellent communication abilities, skilled in interacting with diverse groups and distilling complex technical concepts.

• Experience with Security Incident Response and Threat Modelling.

• You are an innovator who seeks and learns about new technologies, mentors others, shares knowledge, and raises the bar for security engineering practices.
