About the role

Reporting to Wealthsimple’s Director of Compliance & Risk, the Sr. Associate, Payments & Operational Risk, will be responsible for supporting Wealthsimple’s expansion into new payments products and related growth initiatives including building and implementing compliance frameworks to support those expansions. 

Our ideal hire has a builder mindset, is detail oriented, action oriented and proactive. They own their role and continuously help identify ways to improve operational processes and controls while mitigating risks. It is essential that this person manages time well, keeps on top of deliverables, and has the potential to grow with us. Experience in credit products, prepaid cards or other spend operations functions is a strong plus.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Lead the development and implementation of operational risk management frameworks, policies, and procedures.

  • Design and execute risk control self-assessment programs to assess the effectiveness of existing controls and identify areas for improvement.

  • Conduct risk assessments to identify and assess operational risks inherent in business processes, systems, and activities.

  • Participate in cross-functional projects and initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness while managing associated risks.

  • Monitor key risk indicators and assess emerging risks to proactively identify potential issues and trends.

  • Analyze operational incidents and issues to identify root causes, trends, and lessons learned and make recommendations to prevent reoccurrence.

  • Collaborate with business functions and support them to enhance risk awareness, promote a risk culture, and embed risk management principles into daily operations.

  • Support the development and delivery of operational risk training programs.

  • Stay informed about regulatory developments, industry trends, and emerging risks in the financial services, and assess potential impact to the company.

Skills we’re looking for:

  • Relevant Experience: demonstrated success in credit or spend product operations, management consulting, startups, banking and payments, or other operations roles in related fields.

  • Problem Solving: if something seems off, you want to figure out what’s going on; you enjoy navigating uncertainty, bringing clarity to ambiguity and don’t wait for a playbook to be written.

  • Proactive & Action Oriented: acts without being told what to do; taking full ownership of work, and proactively seeks help and input when needed to provide well supported solutions.

  • Efficiency: ability to produce significant output with minimum wasted effort; finds the path of least resistance to the problem definition, solution and execution.

  • Organization & Planning: plans, organizes, and schedules in a productive manner, allowing for a focus on key priorities and regular updates. 

  • Strong Written & Verbal Communication: speaks plainly and truthfully. Communicates complex ideas in a simple & easy-to-understand way for any audience. 

  • Honesty/Integrity: doesn't cut corners; does what is right, not what is politically expedient.

Nice to haves:

  • Knowledge and understanding of payment networks such as, Amex, Mastercard, Visa and Interac.

  • Knowledge of the Retail Payments Activity Act/Regulations. More details can be found here.

  • Knowledge in payments innovation including future technologies such as real-time payments rails, open banking, etc.
