Mission

The mission of the Machine Learning Manager role is to provide dynamic leadership to the Machine Learning Engineering team, fostering a culture of innovation, operational efficiency, and exceptional performance in the company's machine learning endeavors.

This position entails strategic foresight, adept project management, inspiring team guidance, and the continual evolution of machine learning methodologies and standards. As the steward of machine learning initiatives, the Manager ensures seamless alignment with corporate objectives, streamlines project execution, and enhances the organization's competitive positioning within the marketplace.

General Accountabilities

  • Lead and manage the Machine Learning Engineering team, setting clear goals, expectations, and providing guidance and support to ensure project success and professional growth of team members.

  • Develop and implement strategic plans for the machine learning department, aligning technical projects with business goals and ensuring integration with the broader company strategy.

  • Oversee the development, deployment, and maintenance of machine learning models and systems, ensuring they meet high standards of quality, performance, and reliability.

  • Foster an environment of continuous learning and improvement, encouraging the team to stay abreast of the latest machine learning technologies, methodologies, and best practices.

  • Ensure effective project management practices are in place, including task prioritization, resource allocation, and timelines, to facilitate continuous integration and incremental delivery of machine learning projects.

  • Promote a culture of collaboration and knowledge sharing within the team and across the organization, enhancing the collective expertise and efficiency in machine learning endeavors.

  • Actively contribute to business strategy discussions, providing insights and recommendations based on technical expertise and industry trends to drive innovation and competitive advantage.

  • Mentor and develop team members, identifying opportunities for growth and providing feedback and support to foster career advancement and skill enhancement.

Role-related Competencies & Requirements

  • Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field, with a strong focus on machine learning or a related discipline.

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in machine learning or a related field, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role overseeing technical teams.

  • Proven track record of successfully leading machine learning projects from conception to deployment, demonstrating strong project management, technical expertise, and strategic vision.

  • Deep understanding of the machine learning development lifecycle, including best practices in MLOps, data engineering, and model deployment and monitoring.

  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to inspire, motivate, and guide a team towards achieving technical excellence and innovation.

  • Excellent communication skills, capable of effectively engaging with both technical teams and business stakeholders, fostering an environment of open dialogue and collaboration.

  • Strategic thinker who can align machine learning initiatives with broader business goals and adapt to changing market and technology landscapes.

  • Commitment to continuous professional development, both for self and team, staying abreast of industry trends, technologies, and best practices in machine learning.

  • Proficiency in advanced ML tools and programming languages used in data science (e.g., Python, R, SQL).

  • Proficiency in ML cloud services and Saas tools like MLFlow and AWS ecosystem.

  • Proven experience in marketing, e-commerce marketplace, or growth teams.

Expected Outcomes for initial 3 months

First 30 Days:

Assess the current state of the machine learning team, projects, and technologies. Establish rapport with team members and key stakeholders. Identify immediate areas for process improvement and team development.

First 60 Days:

Develop a strategic roadmap for the machine learning department, outlining key projects, goals, and milestones. Implement initial process improvements and begin fostering a culture of continuous learning and knowledge sharing.

First 90 Days:

Demonstrate progress on key strategic projects, with clear metrics for success. Establish a regular feedback and mentorship program within the team. Show enhanced collaboration and knowledge-sharing practices, leading to increased efficiency and innovation in machine learning projects.
