Purpose of Position

In the Payments Tribe, we're in search of an Engineering Manager to lead our team's expansion. While we currently have two teams led by an Engineering Manager, our growth necessitates the formation of a new team. Our Payments Tribe aims to create an optimal experience with self-service payment activities for our Advertiser clients, and to increase our speed and flexibility on all our payment traffic. We design how our customers pay and partners get paid.

You will be responsible for directly leading 3-5 software engineers, spread across Germany, Romania and potentially other of our engineering hubs, as well as interacting and collaborating with other tribes, enabling teams and platform teams.

In this role you coach and mentor your team members, empower them to act autonomously, establish clear ownership and build strong knowledge centres. You are passionate about building high-performing teams and helping your team members grow. You own the delivery of commitments and are always looking to improve productivity. You coordinate across teams and departments as needed to accomplish goals, including, but not limited to, Product, DevOps, UX, InfoSec, and more.

You will foster a safe environment where decisions are delegated and can be communicated effectively. You have a strong technical background in software building and you can help your team unblock delivery if necessary. There is minimal to no expectation of hands-on coding in this role.

Key Tasks

  • Coach and mentor engineers, fostering their growth and career development.

  • Drive recruitment efforts and ensure successful onboarding for new team members.

  • Conduct performance reviews, track individual development plans, and provide regular feedback.

  • Collaborate closely with the Product Manager to define team objectives and OKRs.

  • Enable the team to take ownership of the software delivery lifecycle and drive continuous improvement.

  • Lead meetings with stakeholders, plan work sequences, and set appropriate milestones.

  • Facilitate discussions and decision-making processes within the team, resolving conflicts when necessary.

  • Contribute to knowledge sharing and promote a culture of learning within the team.

  • Manage team capacity and availability, approving absence requests as needed.

  • Contribute to the strategic direction of the Engineering Management group.

Skills & Expertise

You will be great if you have these

  • You have at least 8 years of experience in the Software Engineering industry.

  • You have at least 2 years of experience as an Engineering Manager or any other engineering leadership position. Technical Leads welcome.

  • You possess expertise in the financial domain, including understanding financial concepts such as payment processing and invoicing, as well as compliance standards.

  • You have a background of hands-on experience in any modern relevant programming language (Java, C#, JavaScript, GoLang, Python, etc.) but are now focused on people management.

  • You have a good understanding of fundamental design principles, data modelling, API design, design patterns, SOLID principles, system architecture design, etc. You are generally passionate about software building.

  • You are comfortable with leading and helping others on unit testing, continuous integration and deployment.

  • You can understand, explain and discuss software architecture designs, diagrams and documentation. Can contribute to creation of new software designs in collaboration with other team members.

  • You consider long-term technical strategy, economic viability, interactions between components, compatibility issues, reuse by other systems or teams. You are able to understand, articulate and consider technical problems.

  • You use data to inform your decision making and driving change, and where not available you take meaningful steps to introduce monitoring to improve the quality of decision making.

We also value these

  • Good knowledge of agile development processes and current best practices.

  • Open, clear and efficient communication around technical and non-technical topics openly, clearly and efficiently - able to adopt language based on audience.

  • Analytical thinking, strong problem solving ability.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Good understanding of and interest in the business context and customer needs.

Our Offer

  • Flexi-Week and Work-Life Balance: We prioritise your mental health and wellbeing, offering you a flexible four-day Flexi-Week at full pay and with no reduction to your annual holiday allowance. We also offer a variety of different paid special leaves.

  • Flexi-Office: Do you prefer to work from our cool office, from home, or in a completely different environment? With us, the choice is yours.

  • Development: We’ve built our extensive training suite Awin Academy to cover a wide range of skills that nurture you professionally and personally, with trainings conveniently packaged together to support your overall development. You can also improve your English skills by participating in our local language course.

  • Remote Working: You will receive a monthly allowance to cover part of your running costs. In addition, we will support you in setting up your remote workspace appropriately.

  • Appreciation: Thank and reward colleagues by sending them a voucher through our peer-to-peer program and show your appreciation for colleagues who have gone the extra mile to support you.

Job Application Tip

We do not expect candidates to tick all the boxes 100%. If there is anything missing or that you have not done before, do not shy away from applying. It simply means Awin might be a greater learning opportunity for you.
