We are looking for a Data Engineering Manager to join the MyFitnessPal Engineering team. Our users rely on MyFitnessPal to power their health and fitness journeys every day. As a member of our MyFitnessPal Engineering team, you’ll have the opportunity to positively impact those users with your expertise in the backend systems and data that drive the MyFitnessPal ecosystem. What you’ll be doing:

Our Data Engineering Manager is responsible for coaching and leading a team of talented engineers and analysts as we deliver on our roadmap. To thrive in this role, you will execute well in an agile environment where we’ll depend on you to make pragmatic decisions, establish and use tight feedback loops, and take calculated risks based on your knowledge from collaborating with your peers. You’ve led teams before—either with direct reports or as a technical lead—and are comfortable delivering and receiving feedback with trust and candor. You know that your success is dependent on the success of your team, and you’re committed to coach and serve a team of experienced engineers.

  • Promote growth of teammates through mentorship and coaching

  • Develop relationships across business intelligence, engineering, product and marketing teams

  • Influence and partner with the business intelligence team to optimize data marts used in reporting

  • Support empowered product teams driven by data insights and rely on your team’s data pipelines to experiment new product ideas

  • Evangelize data definitions and transparency through data catalog and data validation tooling

  • Evaluate and improve existing systems and APIs to provide more robust solutions that allow others to move quickly and efficiently.

  • Support resolution of production issues across the entire MyFitnessPal stack

  • Work with our engineering, product and leadership teams in support of MyFitnessPal to solve critical user problems. This is a broad surface area and uses a variety of technologies.

Qualifications to be successful in this role:

  • Have a passion for operational excellence, data quality, and process improvement

  • Strong experience with SQL, Python, dbt, and similar programming languages

  • Help other teammates grow through mentorship and coaching

  • Enjoy solving complex problems with a focus on delivering the smallest executable set.

  • Knowledge of best practices in data analysis, data modeling, and test methodologies for software products and data

  • Experience with analytics tools such as Tableau and Power BI

  • Strong experience in data quality testing and data catalog integrations

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Comfortable leading group discussion and giving presentations to all levels of management and staff

  • Experience working in an Agile environment, either as a scrum master or product owner

  • Ability to effectively communicate with non-technical staff about software and data issues.

  • Ability to work with little or no supervision

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills

  • Experience with B2C marketing, social media advertising, mobile app marketing and reporting, and common marketing technologies preferred (i.e. Segment, Amplitude, Branch, Facebook Ads, Google Search Ads, Apple/Google App store, Apple Search Ads, Appflyer, Split.io, Braze, Tableau, Snowflake)

Please consider applying even if you don’t meet 100% of the qualifications. Research shows you can still be considered for a position if you meet some of the requirements. At MyFitnessPal, we’re building a fitness product for everyone and believe our team should reflect that. We encourage people of different backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and perspectives to apply.

The reasonably estimated salary for this role at MyFitnessPal ranges from $150,000 - $170,000. Actual compensation is based on factors such as the candidate’s skills, qualifications, and experience. In addition, MyFitnessPal offers a wide range of comprehensive and inclusive employee benefits for this role including healthcare, parental planning, mental health benefits, annual performance bonus, a 401(k) plan and match, responsible time off, monthly wellness and technology allowances, and others.
