The Future of Life Institute (FLI) is contracting a part-time Website Developer & Editor to lead the development and maintenance of the FLI website and a few other FLI-owned websites. This person will report directly to Taylor Jones, FLI’s Design and Web Manager.

Do you want to work with one of the leading non-profit voices on AI today to build and maintain web resources used by millions of professionals?

FLI works to reduce global catastrophic risks from transformative technologies and develop optimistic yet realistic visions of the future.

As Website Developer & Editor, you will:

  • Maintain the FLI website, plus a few other campaign-specific websites.

  • Prioritise, plan, and implement new features based on team and user feedback.

  • Prepare and publish content using the Wordpress CMS (blog posts, profiles, pages).

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience building and managing Wordpress websites (with extra credit for candidates who have experience with our particular stack of plugins: Oxygen Builder, Metabox, WS Form, Wordfence).

  • Familiarity with CSS frameworks like TailwindCSS (our site uses AutomaticCSS).

  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP.

  • An understanding of the entire web development process, including design, development, and deployment.

  • Some web design skills, and an ability to design and build webpages from scratch with only a simple brief, without detailed wireframes.

  • Some degree of familiarity with Figma or similar visual prototyping tools.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Excited by the prospect of joining a small but influential team looking to improve humanity’s future.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using a ticket-management system like Jira, Notion, Github.

  • Experience operating user feedback tools such as Ahrefs, HotJar, SEMrush.

  • Experience producing reports using Google Analytics.

  • Experience with back-end development (NGINX, MySQL).

  • Experience with Photoshop or other photo editors.

$30 - $60 an hour

Contract Type: This is a part-time contract, fully remote (though you should be able to attend occasional calls in Europe and US timezones). Demand will likely vary week-to-week, but should average around 20-30 hours per month to begin with.

Compensation will vary depending on experience and geography.

Start Date: We'd like the chosen candidate to start as soon as possible after accepting an offer.

Application Process

Apply by uploading your resume and optional portfolio. Though a portfolio is highly preferred, if you do not have a portfolio then we will also accept a cover letter. Alongside these documents, please also complete the application questions below.

Application Deadline: 1 March 2025. Rolling applications may be considered after the application deadline if the position has not been filled.

Please apply via our website. Email applications are not accepted.

FLI aims to be an inclusive organization. We proactively seek job applications from candidates with diverse backgrounds. If you are passionate about FLI’s mission and think you have what it takes to be successful in this role even though you may not check all the boxes, please still apply. We would appreciate the opportunity to consider your application.

Questions may be directed to jobsadmin@futureoflife.org.

The Future of Life Award, which retrospectively awards unsung heroes who made the world a better place. Past winners include individuals who prevented nuclear wars, helped to eradicate smallpox, and solved the ozone crisis.

Worldbuild.ai, which imagines flourishing futures with strong AI and works out how to get there.

FLI is a largely virtual organization, with a team of 30 distributed across Europe and the US. We have offices in Campbell, California and in Brussels, Belgium.
