Background:

At Mozilla Foundation, we believe the Internet should be a force for good — one that’s open, safe, and inclusive by design. Our mission is to ensure that the Internet is a global public resource that is accessible to all. We mobilize communities, fund bold ideas, and push for tech that serves people. Through advocacy, education, and open-source innovation, we work to make good on the Internet’s promise. Our newly formed Development Team drives philanthropic support that fuels our work.

Description:

Purpose of role

The Vice President, Development will lead our fundraising strategy with energy, clarity, and momentum. We’re looking for a bold operator — someone who doesn’t wait for perfect conditions but knows how to spot an opening and move. This role is about turning urgency into opportunity and strategy into action by building a giving program that matches the ambition of our mission.

The Vice President, Development will be a builder who knows how to grow and establish a team — shaping culture, setting vision, and delivering results along the way. Working in close partnership with the Executive Director, you will create the conditions for fundraising to thrive. You will guide a small, focused team of development professionals and shape a high-trust, high-impact culture. The Vice President will bring experience in growing a diverse, global donor community, and will know how to lead with vision, act with purpose, and get things done.

Primary responsibilities

The job holder will have the following key responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and execution of a global fundraising strategy that fuels our mission and sustains our growth.

  • Build and support a high-performing team that drives innovation, follows best practices, and delivers real results.

  • Expand our funding base by cultivating diverse support from institutions, foundations, major donors, and aligned corporate partners.

  • Proactively create and leverage networking opportunities to strengthen and expand relationships with new and existing relationships.

  • Set ambitious goals and use data to track progress, improve performance, and stay accountable toward organizational goals.

  • Strengthen relationships across teams and funders to keep our work aligned and easy to navigate.

  • Oversee grant processes, ensuring timely submissions, compliance, and strong internal systems.

  • Collaborate with Program Leads to align fundraising with our impact and sharpen how we tell our story.

  • Create donor and supporter experiences that feel personal, thoughtful, and rewarding in order to cultivate long-term support.

  • Act as a key ambassador for the organization, clearly articulating our mission, impact, and funding priorities to external audiences, partners, and potential supporters.

Requirements:

Experience

  • 10+ years of proven success in philanthropic fundraising, including securing support from foundations, major donors, and corporate funders.

  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and close major gifts, with a track record of securing six- and seven-figure contributions.

  • Proven experience building fundraising teams and programs from the ground up, not just operating within established structures.

  • Experienced in developing and executing ambitious fundraising strategies, with the ability to inspire and align teams and stakeholders toward shared goals.

  • Exceptional communicator, skilled at engaging diverse audiences across sectors, geographies, and varying levels of expertise.

  • Strong written communication abilities, with a history of crafting compelling grant proposals, reports, and presentations.

  • Self-starter who thrives in dynamic, fast-paced environments, while fostering a collaborative and connected team culture.

  • Proficient in donor management systems, with experience leveraging data to drive strategic decisions and donor engagement.

Personal traits desired

  • Naturally builds and sustains strong connections within the philanthropic and NGO ecosystem, valuing authentic engagement and long-term relationships.

  • A proactive, energetic individual ready to roll up their sleeves, seize opportunities, and thrive in fast-paced, high-velocity environments.

  • Comfortable working remotely and across diverse cultures and time zones, demonstrating sensitivity and respect for different perspectives.

Terms and conditions

The Vice President, Development should expect to travel extensively, with the frequency and schedule determined at their discretion. Candidates based in Canada, the United States, Germany, or the United Kingdom will be offered a standard employment contract. Individuals residing outside of these countries will be engaged through an Employer of Record (EOR) arrangement.
