Why Mozilla?

Mozilla Corporation is the non-profit-backed technology company that has shaped the internet for the better over the last 25 years. We make pioneering brands like Firefox, the privacy-minded web browser, and Pocket, a service for keeping up with the best content online. Now, with more than 225 million people around the world using our products each month, we’re shaping the next 25 years of technology and helping to reclaim an internet built for people, not companies. Our work focuses on diverse areas including AI, social media, security and more. And we’re doing this while never losing our focus on our core mission – to make the internet better for people.

The Mozilla Corporation is wholly owned by the non-profit 501(c) Mozilla Foundation. This means we aren’t beholden to any shareholders — only to our mission. Along with thousands of volunteer contributors and collaborators all over the world, Mozillians design, build and distribute open-source software that enables people to enjoy the internet on their terms.

What is a Staff Software Engineer at Mozilla?

A Staff Software Engineer is the next level from a Senior Software Engineer. At Mozilla this role can vary but typically a Staff Engineer is a domain expert who leads others within a single team to tackle multi-month projects. They sequence deliverables and manage risks in their team's projects, provide feedback on our strategy and goals affecting the team, and turn our strategy into action for their team members. Staff Software Engineers mentor others by stewarding some responsibilities to more junior and senior engineers so they can take on new ones. They collaborate with management on building team consensus and providing direction. Staff Software Engineers identify gaps and opportunities for improvement to enable a culture of inclusion and allyship, at all levels of the organization.

 About this team and role:

Now more than ever, the Internet is a utility that facilitates modern life. At Mozilla, we take this to heart, striving to build products that keep the Internet open, accessible, and secure for everyone. As a Staff Software Engineer and technical team lead on the Credential Management team, you will lead our engineering team that is responsible for providing an easy, intuitive, reliable, and seamless capture, management and auto-fill experience of passwords, payment methods and addresses within our Firefox browser. You will collaborate with cross-functional partners across Product, UX, Design, Engineering, QA, Localization, Ops, and Support teams to build and maintain core Credential Management features within Firefox. You will coordinate and collaborate with partners across Desktop, Android, iOS and Services teams to deliver a consistent cross-platform Credential Management experience across all devices.

What you’ll do:

  • Design and deliver long term projects that impact multiple cross-functional and cross-platform teams across Mozilla and that support the Credential Management space.

  • Technical ownership over major components of Firefox, taking responsibility for their maintenance and architectural improvement over time.

  • Ensure that the software your team delivers is high quality, measurable, and maintainable.

  • Participate in defining and shaping auto-fill web standards.

  • Responsible for the triaging and resolution of product issues that impact our users – large and small.

  • Mentor others by stewarding some of your responsibilities to more junior engineers

  • Work with cross-functional teams across Mozilla to support, and extend, existing systems to apply innovative ways and technologies in reaching strategic Firefox objectives and goals.

  • Collaborate with management to provide feedback on our strategy and turn that strategy into concrete actions for the team.

What you’ll bring:

  • 7+ years of overall software engineering  experience.

  • Proven ability to successfully lead and ship complex software projects.

  • Experience in working on complex full stack systems at scale

  • Proven experience in JavaScript. C++ and/or Rust is a bonus.

  • Proven knowledge of core web technologies (HTML, DOM, Origins).

  • Working experience with SQL.

  • Ability to take initiative in a loosely structured environment to lead your team to success.

  • An interest and ability to work in a distributed and cross-functional team (which requires good asynchronous written communication skills as well as good verbal communication skills).

  • Creative problem-solving. You like to take initiative to push projects forward but know when to involve others.

  • Commitment to our values:

    • Welcoming differences

    • Being relationship-minded

    • Practicing responsible participation

    • Having grit

Bonus Points for:

  • Experience in data privacy and security.

  • Experience leading scrums and sprint ceremonies.

  • Experience working in open source.

What you’ll get:

  • Generous performance-based bonus plans to all eligible employees - we share in our success as one team

  • Rich medical, dental, and vision coverage

  • Generous retirement contributions with 100% immediate vesting (regardless of whether you contribute)

  • Quarterly all-company wellness days where everyone takes a pause together

  • Country specific holidays plus a day off for your birthday

  • One-time home office stipend

  • Annual professional development budget

  • Quarterly well-being stipend

  • Considerable paid parental leave

  • Employee referral bonus program

  • Other benefits (life/AD&D, disability, EAP, etc. - varies by country)
