Datadog Application Performance Monitoring (APM) provides deep visibility into your applications, enabling you to identify performance bottlenecks, troubleshoot issues, and optimize your services. Customers can ensure the best possible performance and user experience for their applications with distributed tracing, out-of-the-box dashboards and monitors, and seamless correlation with other telemetry data. They can also pinpoint root causes faster and deliver better user experiences — all from a single, unified platform.

We are looking for a Staff Engineer to join the APM teams to drive new projects in the context of our portfolio. In this role, you will partner closely with engineering and product managers within and outside of the department to help shape our roadmap; design and lead initiatives across the stack; and actively help in strengthening our engineering practices and culture. The ideal candidate will join us to shape the product they use everyday into the product they would love if it existed. Our next-level challenge is providing an intelligence layer to all of the telemetry Datadog can collect, to accelerate root cause analysis and guide users to make decisions about how to optimize their systems.

Datadog’s Staff Engineers are our technical leaders operating at the forefront of technology, building solutions that take us through at least our next five years of growth. They do this in three major ways:

  • As individual contributors, they bring world class technical abilities to deliver industry leading systems.

  • As technical leaders they bring experienced technical breadth and communication skills to tackling design and architectural problems spanning the organization, charting the right course, then leading delivery.

  • In both roles they participate in the staff engineering community and help us learn from what the industry is doing and what we've built before, and so improve company wide standards around software and systems engineering.

What you’ll do:

  • Design and drive high-priority, high-visibility projects to make APM the best performance insights product on the market.

  • Provide technical leadership across organizational boundaries to ensure maximum delivery  efficiency.

  • Lead and guide other engineers through product and architectural platform decisions.

  • Provide input on prioritizing engineering-led planning and roadmaps.

  • Collaborate with internal product teams to design solutions that meet our customer needs.

  • Identify challenging problems to solve, prototype what a solution would look like and drive the implementation end to end.

  • Build customer empathy by talking directly to customers.

  • Share strong opinions about how the user experience should look like and collaborate with UX designers and to drive improvements.

Who you are:

  • 10+ years of relevant engineering experience

  • 4+ years of technical leadership experience, including both effective communication of complex concepts and experience coordinating across teams to ship critical products

  • Deep backend programming expertise — you’ve architected, built, and operated complex systems at scale.

  • Customer-first mindset and a strong drive to build products that meet real needs.

  • You care deeply about product quality and have clear, thoughtful opinions on how things should work.

  • You value simplicity and clean design in systems, interfaces, and user experiences.

  • You have a track record of taking full ownership of ambiguous and complex problems and turning them into solutions that deliver real value.

  • Experience with browser or mobile applications is a plus.

Datadog values people from all walks of life. We understand not everyone will meet all the above qualifications on day one. That's okay. If you’re passionate about technology and want to grow your skills, we encourage you to apply.

Benefits and Growth:

New hire stock equity (RSUs) and employee stock purchase plan (ESPP)Continuous professional development, product training, and career pathingIntradepartmental mentor and buddy program for in-house networkingAn inclusive company culture, ability to join our Community Guilds (Datadog employee resource groups)Access to Inclusion Talks, our internal panel discussionsFree, global mental health benefits for employees and dependents age 6+Competitive global benefits
