Software Engineer (Sr. Staff)

We’re hiring deeply experienced engineers to join our teams that work on our customer-facing products, developing features and iterating across our platform. As a Gusto Software Engineer at this level, you’ll oversee large-scale projects end-to-end by driving technical innovation and ongoing improvements for deployed features. Here’s what you’ll do day to day:

• Architect, build, and test Gusto’s product suite the spans across Payroll, Benefits, HR, Time, Tax Credits, and more

• Lead other engineers to innovate on some of the hardest technical problems out there in very complex domains and at a large scale

• Drive in scaling one of the largest Ruby/Rails and Javascript/React applications in the world

• Own the cross-functional alignment with Product Management, Design, and Business teams to understand customer pain points, come up with solutions, and then prototype, iterate, and launch daily

• Build a product that our customers genuinely love

Here’s what we’re looking for:

• Successful applicants will typically have at least 12+ years of professional software development experience

• Experience leading the innovation of customer-facing products and technical management of large projects end-to-end

• Drive the quality of writing, testing and debugging code for highly reliable production systems at scale

• Advanced data modeling skills and hands-on building well-structured, easily maintainable, well-documented code

• Passion for creating memorable experiences for customers

• Expertise in complex product development problems -- we use Rails & React

• Appreciation for a collaborative, test-driven environment

• Experience in one of these would be nice, but not required: 

  • HR, Payroll, Payments, Fintech, or Tax products

  • AI/Machine Learning 

  • API development

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $193,000/yr to $231,000/yr in Denver & most remote locations, and $228,000/yr to $272,000/yr for San Francisco, New York & Seattle. Stock equity is additional. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
