The Community You Will Join:

The Payments Risk Tooling Team builds tools that empower our agents with agility and flexibility to investigate and detect fraud, helping to prevent and mitigate financial losses across all payment transactions that occur throughout the Airbnb ecosystem – with the ultimate goal of enabling positive travel experiences for our Guests and Hosts, and protecting them from bad actors.

The Difference You Will Make:

In the Risk Tooling team, you will be responsible for building and maintaining the case management ecosystem used by agents to investigate risky transactions (as determined by our fraud detection models) and chargeback requests (when Airbnb guests contest a charge on their credit card, for instance). This includes the agent experience (we are a full-stack team and have Front-end engineers too) and all the different aspects of queue management, such as case routing and prioritization, case resolution, event-handling and remediations. You will partner with our Risk specialists and our Transaction Risk and Dispute Resolution engineering teams to develop an efficient and consistent solution to help prevent financial loss at Airbnb, and above all, protect our users from fraudulent behaviors brought on by bad actors across our multiple product surfaces.

A Typical Day:

  • Work with our engineers and partners to continually increase your understanding of the Risk domain, and look for ways to improve our case management ecosystem.

  • Design systems/components and read design proposals from your peers/partners, providing thoughtful insights and calling out concerns.

  • Build systems/components with high-quality in mind and be a constructive code-reviewer for your peers.

  • Help drive the execution of launches, migrations and bug fixes, always upholding best practices, such as thorough monitoring and alerting, high levels of test coverage and clear and legible code.

  • Build rapport with your co-workers and always work to make sure we function as a team.

Your Expertise:

  • 4+ years of backend development experience.

  • Proficiency in at least one major programming language (Java, Kotlin or Scala preferred).

  • Passion for high-quality and detail oriented execution.

  • Interest in building full-stack products, favoring both user experience and business goals.

  • Bachelor’s and/or Master’s Degree in CS or equivalent.
