Senior Manager - Member Foundations & Innovation DE
Apply for this position → Go ad-free with PremiumAt Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what’s next.
We are looking for an experienced leader to run two of our Member data engineering teams: Member Foundations DE and Member Innovation DE. You will lead both teams, will own how the two teams work together, and will help set the strategy for how these teams integrate with the wider Member Data Product organization.
Member Foundations DE builds the core datasets that represent how members interact with the Netflix Product. This includes data about what members see, where they go, and what they do on Netflix, which we source through client-logged events. The team joins those client events with the algorithm and experiment data behind each member's page, and turns the results into the core information that powers analytics, data science, and product decisions for our members at Netflix.
Member Innovation DE works in close partnership with Data Scientists and Product Managers to support new innovation on the Netflix Product, from ideation to production. Much of its work supports A/B tests and product priorities: client logging, data modeling, Spark ETL, and data validation for new features, canvases, and content types. The team builds lower-latency pipelines for learning and analytics, so partners can read results on a new feature before the core datasets catch up.
The two teams run at different speeds. Foundations builds for scale, engineering rigor, and strong data quality guarantees. Innovation moves at the pace of product testing. This role owns how the two find success individually and within the wider Member organization.
To be successful in this role, you need to be a strong leader capable of operating at an extremely high bar and across high talent density. You grow senior engineers into leaders, keep two teams delivering when deadlines and priorities conflict, and earn the trust of senior partners in Product, Data Science, and Engineering. You also need a strong background in data engineering and a sharp product sense.
Responsibilities
- Set the technical and strategic directions for both teams, ensuring they are tied to the larger Member DSE and Data & Insights priorities. Own the near-term plan and the bets that pay off a year or more out, from efficiency gains to new data capabilities for the Member Data Products org.
- Lead the engineers on both teams directly. Grow senior engineers into technical leads who own a domain end to end, so either team can take on more scope without you in the middle. Give people room to fail and learn.
- Decide where work and headcount sit across the two teams. When priorities or structure change, coach your teams and lead them through it.
- Make the hard trade-off calls between the teams, stakeholders, and competing priorities. Lead with context, not control, by explaining your reasoning so the people affected understand it, and stand behind the call.
- Bring both teams into partner strategy and roadmap discussions early, while priorities are still forming. Build relationships with leaders up to the Senior Director level across Member Product, Data Science, and Engineering.
- Set one engineering bar for both teams, including shared client-logging standards, strong accountability, and data-quality guarantees partners can rely on. That means data products built with engineering rigor, pipelines that stay performant as scale grows, and data quality guarantees partners can rely on. Invest in the tooling and patterns that make the bar easier to hit, and replace the ones that stop working.
- Make AI an accelerator for the teams. Decide where it pays off most, from building and migrating pipelines to data validation, debugging, and documentation, and set what great looks like over the next 6, 12, and 18 months. Keep engineers accountable for what they ship, and judge progress through delivery speed and quality.
- Hire senior engineers and leaders who make the teams stronger. Hold high talent density and the keeper test expectations across both teams.
- Spend meaningful time outside your own teams on Data & Insights initiatives, hiring for peer teams, and upleveling the wider data engineering community.
Skills & Characteristics
- You are a strong people leader who also demonstrates humility. You care deeply about people and their success, and you invest in your relationships so you understand each person as a whole and their perspective.
- You handle the hardest people situations well, including escalated feedback and keeper test decisions, and you coach your teams through their own.
- You spot barriers to collaboration and likely conflict between teams early, and you resolve them directly with the people involved.
- You lead with business and product judgment and back it with technical depth. You keep process light.
- You are comfortable without a spec. Nobody will hand these teams a list of what to build, so you form your own view of the durable investments and make the case for them.
- You have strong opinions and act on them. You have made big bets, been wrong on some, and can say what you learned.
- You use AI in your own work every day. You know where it can be trusted in data engineering and where it can't, and you can tell real leverage from hype.
- You're allergic to micromanagement. You lead through your engineers: give context, delegate, and let strong people run their domains.
- You write and speak clearly for senior audiences, and you are self-aware about how others hear and perceive you.
Preferred Requirements
- You have 10+ years of experience in data engineering or similar distributed systems skillset, with a strong programming background (at least one major language) and SQL.
- You have 8+ years of engineering leadership experience, including leading multiple data engineering teams.
- You have a proven track record of strong business intuition, product sense, and analytics.
- You have developed managers, either by growing engineers into the role or by coaching new managers through their first year.
- You have worked in a technical role at a large-scale, consumer-facing digital company that uses A/B tests to make product decisions.
- You have experience with large-scale client logging events and with measuring product experiments.
- You have deep experience with distributed data processing (Spark, Flink) and data at a very large scale (PBs). You can go deep on design and architecture with senior engineers without needing to be hands-on day to day.
- You have a MS in Computer Science/Engineering, or related field.
