Senior Engineering Manager - Infrastructure

The Service Platform team increases developer velocity at Airbnb by providing the standardized, easy to use service RPC framework and core systems libraries, and scaling service developer tooling and workflows for Airbnb’s largest code repository. As the engineering manager, you’ll lead a team of talented software developers that work to improve productivity for all of Airbnb’s backend engineers.

The Service Platform team is part of our Developer Platform org. Airbnb is evolving our large Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) to meet the company’s changing needs and ambitions. • Shape and execute on the Service Platform strategy, modernizing our backend service framework and scaling our development tools and workflows to accelerate development across Airbnb.

• Manage, grow, and inspire a distributed team of engineers working on large-scale systems at the core of Airbnb’s backend developer experience.

A Typical Day: 

As the Sr. Engineering Manager for Service Platform, you will lead the teams responsible for Airbnb’s core service frameworks and developer tools. In this role, you will be:

• Leading and managing two high-impact teams — Service Frameworks and Service Tools — ensuring they are aligned, supported, and working cohesively toward shared goals.

• Driving the technical strategy and roadmap for the Service Platform pillar, making foundational decisions that influence how services are built, tested, deployed, and operated across Airbnb.

• Collaborating deeply with stakeholders across Developer Platform, Infrastructure, and product engineering to understand needs, influence direction, and ensure that our work accelerates Airbnb’s broader priorities.

• Mentoring and developing engineers and managers, providing clear feedback, identifying growth opportunities, and elevating the next generation of technical leaders.

• Cultivating a strong engineering culture centered on collaboration, ownership, empathy for developers, customer-centricity, and continuous improvement.

• Staying current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices — and thoughtfully integrating them into our frameworks, tools, and long-term strategy.

• Ensuring operational excellence, raising quality standards, and modeling craftsmanship in how we design systems and deliver platform capabilities.

Your Expertise:

• A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

• Proven engineering leadership experience (ideally 5+ years managing engineers, with at least 2+ years at a manager-of-managers level).

• Experience architecting, building, and maintaining highly available services in a large service-oriented architecture (SOA). 

• Familiarity with patterns, libraries and frameworks for building and testing services, and service-to-service communication.

• Been actively involved in defining and setting organizational  strategies and roadmaps, and deriving measuring goals and success criteria. 

• Excelled at building highly-functional, healthy, inclusive, and collaborative teams.

• Consistently made culture choices that positively impact all of engineering.

Your Location:

This position is US - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager.
