Gradient AI:

Gradient AI is revolutionizing Group Health and P&C insurance with AI-powered solutions that help insurers predict risk more accurately, improve profitability, and automate underwriting and claims. Our SaaS platform taps into one of the industry’s largest data lakes—tens of millions of policies and claims—to deliver deep, actionable insights. Trusted by leading carriers, MGAs, TPAs, and self-insured employers, Gradient AI has grown rapidly since our founding in 2018. Backed by $56M in Series C funding, we're scaling fast—and it's an exciting time to join the team.

About the Role:

At Gradient AI, we are transforming insurance with advanced machine learning and rich data. As a Senior Data Scientist, you will help shape the future of our underwriting products in the healthcare or care management space by turning complex data into real value for our customers.

You will work closely with a talented and supportive team to research user needs, prototype new ideas, build production models, and deliver intelligent solutions at scale. If you enjoy solving real problems with real impact in a collaborative and fast-moving environment, this is the role for you!

This is a fully remote opportunity.

How you will make an impact:

  • Design, develop, and implement predictive models for underwriting and patient care management, utilizing machine learning and deep learning techniques.

  • Analyze large datasets to identify trends, patterns, and anomalies that can inform underwriting decisions and enhance patient care strategies.

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including product management, data engineering, software engineering, actuarial consulting, clinical, and IT, to understand business needs and translate them into data-driven solutions.

  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in data science and health insurance. Propose innovative solutions to enhance underwriting processes and patient care management.

Experience requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Biostatistics, Mathematics, or similar related field AND 8+ years of professional data science experience building health insurance underwriting or care management solutions

  • OR Master’s or Ph.D in Computer Science, Data Science, Biostatistics, Mathematics, or similar related field AND 3+ years of professional data science experience building health insurance underwriting or care management solutions

Skills needed to succeed:

  • Advanced proficiency in Python and its core data science ecosystem (e.g., Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, LightGBM, etc.)

  • Hands-on experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow, and an understanding of modern architectures (e.g., Transformers, Neural Networks, LLMs).

  • Strong technical communication and collaboration skills, particularly communicating with nontechnical stakeholders and working collaboratively with engineering/product teams to meet project goals and timelines

  • Proficiency analyzing and building model utilizing health insurance claims data, electronic medical records, or similar patient health and prescription data.

  • Fluency in SQL, Relational databases, and Databricks

  • Fluency in AWS or similar Cloud computing environment

Bonus qualifications:

  • Fluency with actuarial methods and working with actuaries is a plus

  • Experience with MLOps principles and tools such as MLflow to build, deploy, and productionize machine learning models is a nice to have

What We Offer:

  • A fun, team-oriented startup culture.

  • Generous stock options - we all get to own a piece of what we’re building.

  • Unlimited vacation days.

  • Flexible schedule that supports working from home.

  • Full benefits package includes medical, dental, vision, 401k, paid paternal leave, and more.

  • Ample opportunities to learn and take on new responsibilities.

We are an equal opportunity employer.
