Senior Backend Engineer
Oddball believes that the best products are built when companies understand and value the things they are working on. We value learning and growth and the ability to make a big impact at a small company. We believe that we can make big changes happen and improve the daily lives of millions of people by bringing quality software to the federal space.
What you'll be doing:
You’ll design and implement backend services using Node.js/TypeScript, supporting data ingestion, transformation, and API integration workflows. You’ll work closely with client teams to clarify requirements, propose technical approaches, and ensure backend services align with interoperability standards such as FHIR or MCP frameworks.
You’ll also help shape the direction of the backend stack—improving performance, reliability, logging, error handling, and automation across the service. This role requires strong independent problem-solving, clear communication, and the ability to own backend decisions in a small, focused engineering environment.
What you’ll bring:
Mid-to-senior level backend engineering experience with Node.js and TypeScript
Solid hands-on experience building RESTful APIs, services, and backend workflow logic
Ability to operate independently and unblock yourself when working as the primary backend engineer
Experience engaging directly with clients or stakeholders, communicating technical decisions and trade-offs
Familiarity with backend testing (unit, functional/e2e, load), security audits, debugging, observability, alerting, and performance optimization
Experience working with relational databases (like PostgreSQL), index/query optimization, backend validation, and coding APIs defensively against user input.
Comfort working in Agile environments (planning, refinement, standups, retrospectives)
Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate cross-functionally
Performs other related duties as assigned
Bonus if you have
Experience or interest in FHIR, healthcare data, or data interoperability
Exposure to MCP (Model Context Protocol), AI/LLM models, and integration with tools like AWS Bedrock
Experience acting as a Backend Lead or mentoring other engineers
Familiarity with cloud-native environments (AWS preferred) and services like RDS Aurora, Docker containers, Kubernetes, EventBridge, SQS, and CI/CD automation.
Experience with NestJS or similar backend frameworks with TypeScript.
