The Community You Will Join:
Airbnb is seeking a detail-driven Senior Accountant to join our Accounting Operatoins team and support continued global growth. This role sits at the intersection of accounting, data, and systems, ensuring accurate financial reporting while driving scalable, efficient processes. The Senior Accountant will own end-to-end accounting activities, including reconciliations, reporting, and systems support, while strengthening the control environment and delivering process improvements. You will collaborate cross-functionally with Finance Technology, Product, Engineering, Business Development and external partners. The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong understanding of GAAP operating expense recognition principles such as capitalization, lease recognition, as well as, excellent technical and communication skills, and the ability to partner effectively across business functions. This position reports to the Manager, Accounting Operations.
A Typical Day:
- Manage the monthly close and financial reporting process, including preparation of routine and non-routine journal entries, reconciliations, variance analysis, and stakeholder communication.
- Support lease, fixed asset, software capitalization, and other operating expense accounting impacting the income statement and balance sheet, ensuring accurate GAAP reporting and SOX compliance.
- Perform financial statement variance and fluctuation analysis, identifying anomalies and documenting key drivers.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for accounting policies, systems, and processes, supporting new products, features, and system changes through testing and validation.
- Drive process improvements, standardization, automation, and ERP optimization to meet SLA/KPI targets and support scalable operations.
- Maintain robust documentation for accounting systems, workflows, and key controls; support transitions, knowledge transfer, and cross-training initiatives.
- Serves as a Subject Matter Expert for related policies and processes.
- Communicating accounting requirements and frameworks to partner teams for new products and feature changes, including testing and validation.
- Collaborate with Technical Accounting on research and the preparation of accounting memos and business process documentation
- Leverage data and automation tools (e.g., Alteryx, SQL, AI-enabled workflows) to analyze trends, risks, and opportunities, delivering actionable insights to improve performance and reduce risk.
- Contribute to ad hoc projects, special analyses, and strategic finance initiatives, effectively communicating results and updates to leadership.
Your Expertise:
- BA/BS in Accounting or Finance
- 5+ years of relevant experience, ideally including public accounting or a high-growth tech environment
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and revenue recognition guidance
- CPA certification a strong plus
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, formula logic)
- Systems experience: Oracle or other large ERP preferred, SQL preferred
- Communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively with both finance and non-finance stakeholders
- Excellent problem-solving skills and experience analyzing high volume, multi-currency transactions in a global business environment
- Capable of handling multiple projects in a fast paced, hyper growth environment
- Ability to own projects end-to-end: building out timelines, key milestones, provide regular updates to stakeholders and delivery against agreed upon specs
- Ability to define and implement internal or external controls or best practices
- Desire to continuously improve and a positive, 'can-do' approach
