Who we are

About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

Stripe’s Product Legal team is responsible for managing the legal and regulatory elements of the design, build and execution of our many products and services. We work on some of the most difficult technical, commercial, and regulatory problems around, and we’re looking for a product lawyer to join the team. In this role you will be a key advisor and voice for our Stripe Connect Product - Stripe’s largest payments product which enables marketplaces and platforms to enable payment capabilities for their merchants across the globe. In this role, you will work on a diverse set of issues across payments and money movement, product development, and innovative technology.

What you’ll do

The ideal candidate is passionate about helping businesses grow and thrive in the payments space. We’re looking for someone who is a team player and willing to jump in on tasks of any size. Broad experience in financial technology, payments and money transmission, and experience with developer platforms and internet tech is a huge plus.

Responsibilities

  • Be part of a growing team of counsel who are responsible for helping Stripe deliver banking-as-a-service products across the globe, including credit and debit card products.

  • Counsel Stripe Issuing product teams operating at the cutting edge intersection of technological innovation, e-commerce user experiences, and financial services compliance on a range of issues including payments, regulatory, card network rules, GTM and monetization, consumer protection, marketing, and data privacy.

  • Actively collaborate with a wide variety of Stripe teams, including product, engineering, partnerships, compliance, risk, and marketing, on a range of issues related to product development and commercialization.

  • Work closely with colleagues across Stripe’s global legal team to support Stripe's regulatory structure, its customer agreements, and strategic financial partnerships.

  • Help scope and build scalable and effective processes for legal review and launch of new products.

  • Advise on new and emerging legal and regulatory developments impacting card products, and identifying trends and potential impacts on business activities and adapting existing laws to new technologies.

  • Participate as a proactive and strategic business partner to senior managers and be a trusted advisor.

Who you are

We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements

  • 5+ years of experience as a qualified lawyer in a top law firm, in-house legal team and/or government agency, with expertise in cards, small business lending, and capital markets and the related regulatory landscape.

  • A JD degree (or local equivalent) and membership in at least one U.S. state bar.

  • Strong understanding of the U.S. card issuing and payments industry, including prepaid cards, debit cards, credit cards.

  • Relevant experience on legal issues impacting financial services and technology products, such as money transmission, privacy, consumer protection, and commercial and consumer lending.

  • Experience with drafting and negotiating complex partnership and/or technology deals, preferably in the financial services industry (e.g., payments, card networks, credit and/or debit cards).

  • Familiarity with counseling teams that solve issues through technology by translating complex legal requirements into clear and actionable advice that helps the business move forward.

  • An entrepreneurial spirit: a self-starter who thrives in a fast paced environment, deals well with ambiguity and focuses on driving impact.

  • Excellent judgment and capable of making smart decisions with imperfect information.

  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal).

  • Excellent project management skills and ability to work under tight deadlines.
