Job Description

To implement media strategies that provide Oxfam America and Oxfam International humanitarian initiatives with high-quality media coverage + public relations wins that influence key audiences, including the public, policymakers and decision makers in the United States and US media consumers. Serve as primary contact with members of the media and serve as a thought partner to Oxfam’s humanitarian staff. In addition, act as a deployable media relations resource for the confederation during humanitarian emergencies.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Generate regular, strategic, high-quality media coverage of Oxfam America’s humanitarian advocacy initiatives through sophisticated and creative proactive and reactive media work.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with key journalists in US print, broadcast and digital media.

  • Write and edit messaging, talking points, press releases, blogs, opinion pieces, organize press events, and other related media work.

  • Create and implement media strategies in coordination with Manager of Humanitarian Media Relations, Director of Media Relations and other media officers to ensure that all media work is integrated to support broad Oxfam America communications plan that expands the public profile and impact of Oxfam in the United States.

  • Seek, arrange, and facilitate media interviews for Oxfam spokespeople and assist staff with media skills development.

  •  As needed, serve as Media Officer on the ground during emergencies in countries where Oxfam is implementing programs. When deployed, develop relationships with media within the region of the emergency.

  • Work closely with members of the Digital Engagement team to brainstorm and implement creative, multi-platform offerings.

  • Monitor, evaluate, and draw conclusions on impact of media work.

  • Work with communications and advocacy staff from other Oxfam affiliates, country and regional teams, and Oxfam International regarding media and advocacy strategies and initiatives.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

POSITION EXPECTATIONS

  • Will stay abreast of professional standards, trends, and issues affecting this set of responsibilities, demonstrating continuous learning of the field.

  • Will work effectively and collaboratively in support of building a team-based, problem-solving work culture treating all persons with dignity and respect, and will be familiar with and committed to Oxfam America’s mission, values and goals.

  • Will have a fundamental understanding of gender justice and diversity within key areas of responsibility and a commitment to promoting gender justice, racial equity, and diversity in our workplace and programs.

  • Within key areas of responsibility, will have a commitment to and be accountable for activities contributing towards a safe and accountable workplace environment, projects and relationships for staff, partners and the communities we serve.

  • Willing to travel internationally, possibly including 3-5 trips per year in the US of 1-5 days each, and 1-2 international trips 1-2 weeks each. Travel will be determined based on emergencies that arise and needs within the confederation.

Qualifications

  • Certifications in related field(s), Associate’s Degree, some studies in pursuit of Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, International relations, Political Science or related field or equivalent combination of work experience, education, and training.

  • Three to five years of experience in media or public relations field, ideally specializing in humanitarian work.

  • Proven ability to persuade by the written and spoken word.

  • Interest in and experience with multi-platform communications campaigns.

  • Existing key media contracts.

  • Commitment to the goals of Oxfam’s policy initiatives, humanitarian work overseas and educational role in the United States.

  • Demonstrated skills in media relations and writing for both the general public and policy makers.

  • Strong media instincts and demonstrated experience creating and implementing media strategies.

  • Demonstrated ability to participate in the development and promotion of public policy.

  • The ability and experience to balance multiple demands and deadlines with urgency and composure.

  • Knowledge of issues relevant to international development and inequality work.

  • Demonstrated ability to serve as public spokesperson with media and large audiences.

  • A positive attitude and eagerness to work in a collaborative and fast-paced team environment.

PREFERRRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advocacy communications or international development background.

  • Experience or expertise in humanitarian or development work.

  • Ability to communicate in Spanish and/or French.

Recommended Salary Range - $72,000 - $75,000
