What We Do
The Map Design team is a small, versatile team of product designers and cartographers who are obsessed with finding systematic solutions to hard problems, and, in the process, inventing the future of how people interact with location. Most recently, we launched Mapbox Standard, a 3D basemap that is setting new standards for digital map design.
We’re looking for a Staff Map Designer to join our team and set the vision for the most beautiful maps that users around the world can customize using Mapbox Studio or use out-of-the-box via our SDKs. The Staff Map Designer will execute the designs for this vision and collaborate with other teams, such as product, data and engineering teams, to ensure the product delivers on quality, performance and desirability.
What You'll Do
Drive the roadmap for basemaps that Mapbox ships as part of their product portfolio, working closely with engineers from the map rendering and geodata teams
Lead concept design for future map-related products and developer tools
Work with cross-functional teams to help define the map renderer specification and be a bar-setter for visual quality
Participate in user research/customer success conversations to be close to customer needs
Build static and interactive prototypes for sales and customer conversations
Assist enterprise customers with map design requests, from building custom base maps to providing consultations on customer’s maps
Contribute to internal tooling around the cartographic design workflow
What We Believe are Important Traits for This Role
Proven experience designing maps or map-related products
Excellent visual design skills to demonstrate ideas
Ability to rapidly prototype product ideas using Figma or code
Discipline to manage your own schedule in alignment with the team’s overall needs
Excellent communication skills – written and verbal
Expertise with design tools, such as Figma or Adobe Creative Suite
Expertise in UX design or visual/graphic design
Experience in shipping successful software products
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in designing for automotive or navigation-focused products
Familiarity with design frameworks and methods, such as design thinking
Familiarity with frontend development, command line tools, and Git / Github
Familiarity with Mapbox Studio & Mapbox GL style specification, including expression syntax
