This position is employed by Airbnb Inc., however the role will provide direct support to Airbnb.org, an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit that focuses on emergency response and provides temporary housing for people in times of crisis. The Community You Will Join: 

The Manager, Emergency Response is responsible for leading our rapid responses to natural and man-made disasters around the world. You will build and manage a lean global team that is able to provide emergency housing to survivors within 72 hours of an event, irrespective of location in the world. You will create processes and strategies to increase efficiencies and scale impact. You will help align and synergize response capabilities with our other programming arms, Strategic Partnerships and Institutional Partnerships, so that we have a harmonized, multifaceted response to major events.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Airbnb.org, this position demands a visionary leader with a proven track record in emergency response, adept people management skills, and the ability to forge impactful partnerships with nonprofits and government agencies.

As the leader of our emergency response activities, you are expected to significantly increase the number of people Airbnb.org helps and the speed with which we provide assistance. You’ll be able to think strategically and also be able to deploy to the field on short notice to manage operations on the ground. You'll have a proven track record for leveraging data and technology to scale operations and impact.

The Difference You Will Make:

  • Lead global emergency response operations for Airbnb.org, with a focus on providing temporary housing for disaster survivors, including developing strategies, protocols and criteria to quickly and efficiently evaluate, respond and monitor global emergencies.

  • Coordinate simultaneous, diverse responses to disasters and keep internal stakeholders engaged and informed during response activities.

  • Find creative, impactful ways to utilize Airbnb technology, host network and employees in responses.

  • Work closely with the Operations team to optimize housing supply availability for responses, prioritizing strategies that reduce the costs of stays and provide the greatest positive impact for our guests.

  • Work collaboratively with programmatic peer groups, Strategic Partnerships and Institutional Partnerships, to leverage their capacity for a unified approach to responses.

  • Develop a monitoring system that rapidly assesses global events and recommends possible courses of action.

A Typical Day: 

  • Improve our response readiness by using time between responses to make operational improvements including updating processes, building partnerships, advocating for new product functionality, improving global 24/7 coverage, and expanding team’s capacity.

  • Identify ways to reach particularly vulnerable populations that have been disproportionately affected by emergencies.

  • Support marketing efforts to increase revenue. 

  • Partner with your counterparts in Strategic Partnerships and Institutional Partnerships to maximize synergies between our three program areas.

  • Proactively seek & incorporate best practices and thought leadership from external experts into our program and operations; including cultivating relationships with various government entities and emergency management authorities across priority markets.

Your Expertise:

  • 10+ years experience in US and international emergency response, with strong focus on operations.

  • Track record of leading large-scale efforts that rely on partnerships with on-the-ground organizations.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple work streams in a highly matrixed organization structure.

  • Long-term strategic thinking balanced with near-term execution skills.

  • Proven ability to build strong relationships and influence business leaders.

  • Strong leadership and excellent communication skills.

  • Thrives in ambiguity in a fast-paced environment.

  • Willingness to travel on short notice for unpredictable duration. While duration is unpredictable, travel may be up to 50% of the year.

This position is US - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager.
