Who we are

About the team

Stripe’s TOPS Legal team (Tech transactions, Outsourcing, Partners, Suppliers) is responsible for structuring and negotiating engagements with Stripe’s technology and platform partners, global service providers to Stripe, and key product enablers. We work on complex and business-critical transactions and cross-functional projects, always striving to enable the business’s ambitious roadmap while upholding Stripe’s compliance practices. In this role, you’ll be a subject matter expert and key advisor on a range of transactions to support Stripe’s partnerships, infrastructure, procurement services, and products. You’ll move with urgency, effectively advising clients with a pro-business perspective to support their strategic objectives.

What you’ll do

The ideal candidate is passionate about Stripe’s mission of helping businesses grow and thrives in solving complex legal, technology, and business issues in collaboration with others. We’re looking for someone who is a team player and willing to jump in on tasks of any size. Experience in financial technology, payments, and/or financial services is helpful, but not required, for you to be successful in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Draft, review, and negotiate complex inbound supplier agreements for SaaS, enterprise software, facilities services, recruiting services, construction services, professional services, consulting services, benefits providers, and managed services, as well as structuring critical contingent workforce and insurance brokerage partnerships.

  • Act as a trusted advisor on legal and commercial supplier issues to senior business leaders for client teams like People, Global Workplace, Global Recruiting, Core Technologies, and Product.

  • Collaborate and build efficiencies with talented teams across Stripe, including Strategic Sourcing, Supplier Deal Management, Corporate Legal, Product Legal, Privacy Legal, Regulatory Legal, Intellectual Property, Security GRC, Tax, Finance & Strategy, and Third Party Risk Management.

  • Develop and implement continuous improvement of tools, processes, training, and playbooks to help manage high-volume workstreams and educate internal and external counsel.

  • Ensure Stripe’s commercial relationships comply with applicable law, Stripe’s data privacy and security policies, global privacy regulations, and global outsourced services guidelines.

  • Identify and evaluate business and legal risks, and find creative ways to mitigate them while achieving business goals.

  • Effectively distill and explain complex issues in a meaningful and effective way to a variety of cross-functional stakeholders.

  • Be able to prioritize workloads and competing priorities with skillful multitasking.

  • Spot issues, develop solutions, and counsel teams on issues relating to data protection and privacy regulations, intellectual property, risk management, compliance, and cybersecurity.

  • Act as a responsive point of escalation for outside counsel.

Who you are

We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of related experience working at a leading law firm and/or in-house legal department negotiating inbound services and technology contracts.

  • The ability to counsel internal teams based on a strong understanding of legal and regulatory frameworks, as well as industry standards relating to data privacy and protection, data security, and other emerging technology issues.

  • Sound and practical business judgment and the ability to make smart decisions in the face of ambiguity and imperfect information.

  • Ability to effectively prioritize and advance multiple deals happening simultaneously, often on tight deadlines.

  • A clear and concise communicator (in written and verbal forms), who can distill the key risks and explain complex, nuanced issues in plain and simple terms.

  • Strong project management skills with attention to detail.

  • A strong sense of ownership where you proactively identify opportunities for our team and Stripe to improve; you’re willing to jump in and do whatever needs to be done in an enthusiastic and resourceful manner.

  • Humility, curiosity about an evolving industry, and a terrific sense of humor.

Preferred Qualifications

  • History of advising high growth companies.

  • Experience working in a highly regulated industry.
