At VIATRIS, we see healthcare not as it is but as it should be. We act courageously and are uniquely positioned to be a source of stability in a world of evolving healthcare needs. Viatris empowers people worldwide to live healthier at every stage of life. We do so via:

  • Access – Providing high quality trusted medicines regardless of geography or circumstance;

  • Leadership – Advancing sustainable operations and innovative solutions to improve patient health; and

  • Partnership – Leveraging our collective expertise to connect people to products and services.

Every day, we rise to the challenge to make a difference and here’s how the Head of US Business Development role will make an impact:

The Head of Business Development – U.S. will lead the identification, evaluation, and execution of strategic growth opportunities in the U.S. pharmaceutical market, with a focus on generics, complex generics, promoted and non-promoted branded pharmaceutical products. This individual will be responsible for sourcing and negotiating deals—including in-licensing, co-development, and product acquisitions—that align with the U.S. commercial strategy and broader global BD objectives. This role requires a strong understanding of U.S. regulatory and commercial dynamics, exceptional deal execution skills, and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally with Commercial, Regulatory, Legal, and Manufacturing teams. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, matrixed environment and act as a key contributor to the company’s long-term growth in the U.S.

Key responsibilities for this role include:

  • Identify and evaluate new business opportunities (e.g., product in-licensing, co-development, strategic alliances, or acquisitions) focused on the U.S. market.

  • Monitor competitive landscape, market trends, regulatory developments, and pricing pressures to shape opportunity pipeline.

  • Maintain a strong network of external relationships with U.S. and international partners.

  • Collaborate with the Commercial leadership teams to conduct opportunity assessments and build business cases for new deals.

  • Oversee valuation modeling, revenue forecasting, and return analysis for potential transactions.

  • Lead initial commercial diligence for U.S.-focused opportunities.

  • Manage the deal process from NDA to term sheet to definitive agreement, ensuring alignment with internal governance processes.

  • Support contract negotiations and help shape deal structures that reflect U.S. market needs and capabilities.

  • Serve as a liaison between U.S. Commercial leadership and Global BD to ensure local strategic needs are addressed in BD activities.

  • Collaborate closely with Regulatory Affairs, Portfolio, Medical Affairs, and Operations to assess feasibility and readiness for new product integrations.

  • Provide regular updates to the Head of Global Business Development on U.S. pipeline activity, partner relationships, and transaction status.

The minimum qualifications for this role are:

  • Master’s degree preferred with 10+ years of experience in business development, commercial strategy, or portfolio management within the U.S. pharmaceutical industry.  Related experience and/or education may be considered.

  • Deep knowledge of the U.S. generics and complex generics market, including regulatory pathways (ANDA, 505(b)(2)), authorized generics, pricing trends, and competitive landscape.

  • Proven success in deal execution, commercial assessment, and stakeholder management.

  • Experience working with cross-functional teams, including Legal, Finance, Regulatory, and Supply Chain.

  • Strong financial and strategic acumen; ability to evaluate risk, model scenarios, and support deal negotiations.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience presenting to senior leadership.

  • This position offers flexibility for remote work, with a strong preference for candidates based along the East Coast U.S. Occasional travel may be required based on business needs.

  • Proficiency in speaking, comprehending, reading, and writing English is required.

Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location. The salary range for this position is: $275,000 - $335,000.

At Viatris, we offer competitive salaries, benefits and an inclusive environment where you can use your experiences, perspectives and skills to help make an impact on the lives of others.

Viatris is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, national origin, religion, age, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, or protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by local, state, or federal laws, rules, or regulations.
