At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what’s next.

How do you spark joy in hundreds of millions of people? It starts with a vision - that technology can give voice to stories around the world. In delivering those much-loved stories, Netflix is responsible for a significant portion of global internet traffic.

To steward that responsibility, we work collaboratively with ISPs to deploy Open Connect, Netflix’s Content Delivery Network (CDN), which delivers 100% of Netflix's video traffic. Our team’s mission is to support that delivery by ensuring the smooth coordination and operation of the Open Connect Appliances (OCAs) deployed by the thousands around the world, to provide a fantastic viewing experience for all Netflix members.

We are looking for a seasoned engineering leader to lead the engineering team responsible for foundational components to the Open Connect Control Plane. In this role, the successful candidate would be responsible for defining, socializing, coordinating and executing the roadmap for the foundations team that provide components leveraged by other Control Plane teams.

The Role

Open Connect’s Control Plane teams are responsible for the availability, scalability, and usability of the functionality that enables other businesses to be successful. Our platform is a fundamental building block to our streaming initiatives - providing the critical software stack solutions for one of the world’s largest CDNs and empowering stakeholders to leverage the CDN more efficiently and reliably. In this position, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Identifying developments and components within other teams that share similarities enough that they can be generalized and leveraged more effectively

  • Engaging with the authors and owners of these components and driving the design, implementation and architecture to facilitate this increased leverage

  • Being the vanguard for technical excellence within Open Connect Control Plane teams, advocating for the groups needs from other platform and support organizations, and defining and demonstrating clean and useful utilization of these systems

  • Nurture and expand a high performance, healthy engineering organization

  • Drive and contribute to collaborative projects across engineering (eg clients, encoding) and other functions (eg operations, capacity planning, content)

This highly visible role requires building great partnerships with senior engineering and operations leaders. We are looking for a leader with experience leading successful large-scale CDN edge or cloud ingress infrastructure and a strong and in-depth understanding of the experience of software teams so they can be a strong advocate for velocity, iteration, and reliability, ensuring the internal teams that depend on Open Connect continue to enjoy market-leading economics, scale and reliability.

You Are:

  • An empathetic and humble leader with deep expertise to draw on, combined with a natural curiosity to learn more

  • Someone who keeps their technical skills sharp with meaningful engineering work

  • Able to see beyond immediate specifications, can summarize requirements, and architect forward-looking solutions that cross multiple applications

  • Capable of working in a highly-collaborative environment alongside your teammates, engineers, Partner Engagement Managers, project managers, and operations teams

  • Articulate in communicating opportunities for continuous improvements to existing systems with a clear understanding of the impact on the business.

  • Always striving to develop and deploy in measured increments while taking responsibility for the quality of your teams’ work

Required Skills

  • Experience leading teams responsible for architecture and development of large scale, highly efficient, reliable, and manageable software systems

  • Thorough technical understanding of internet architecture, video streaming, distributed cloud systems, scaled real-time data processing systems, and related topics

  • Experience designing, implementing, debugging and operating large scale 24/7 production systems

  • Exceptional communication, cross-discipline collaboration, and leadership skills

Things that show what we work on and how we think

  • FreeBSD optimization used by Netflix to serve 800 Gb/s from a single server

  • Distributing Content to Open Connect

If this role sounds interesting but you’re unsure whether you meet every qualification, we encourage you to apply. Please don’t self-select out, we’d love to have a conversation and explore the fit together.

Generally, our compensation structure consists solely of an annual salary; we do not have bonuses. You choose each year how much of your compensation you want in salary versus stock options. To determine your personal top of market compensation, we rely on market indicators and consider your specific job family, background, skills, and experience to determine your compensation in the market range. The range for this role is $436,000.00 - $791,000.00. This compensation range will vary based on location.
