An overview of this role

As the Engineering Manager for GitLab SaaS Production Engineering, you’ll lead the team that operates and maintains our production platforms across both multi-tenant and single-tenant SaaS environments. You’ll focus on consolidating and unifying existing tooling and processes into cohesive, standardised approaches. These approaches reduce duplication, simplify operations, and improve reliability for every GitLab SaaS customer. In this role, you’ll build and develop a high-performing, collaborative engineering team. You’ll shape the roadmap in partnership with Product Management and foster an environment where team members grow into strong technical leaders. You’ll also participate in our Incident Management rotation and work closely with Infrastructure Platforms, Engineering, Support, and Customer Success teams to strengthen the availability, security, and scalability of GitLab SaaS through automation and sound engineering practices.

Some examples of our projects:

  • Unifying platform tooling and workflows across GitLab.com and single-tenant SaaS environments

  • Standardising incident response and operational practices to improve the reliability of all production services

What you’ll do

  • Lead and develop a high-performing GitLab SaaS Production Engineering team that lives GitLab values and delivers reliable outcomes.

  • Drive the unification of platforms, tooling, and processes that operate and maintain our multi-tenant and single-tenant SaaS production environments.

  • Own the strategy and execution to consolidate duplicated tooling into cohesive, standardized approaches that simplify operations and improve reliability.

  • Collaborate closely with Infrastructure Platforms, Product Management, and peer engineering teams to define, prioritize, and manage the team roadmap and backlog.

  • Guide the team in adopting automation and sound engineering practices that strengthen the availability, security, and scalability of GitLab SaaS.

  • Participate in the Incident Management on-call rotation, partnering with reliability engineers and development teams to respond to and learn from production incidents.

  • Build and nurture a collaborative engineering culture that develops individual contributors into strong technical leaders and grows the team’s impact over time.

What you’ll bring

  • Experience leading production, platform engineering, or site reliability engineering teams that operate large-scale SaaS environments.

  • Strong technical background in building, running, and improving highly available, consumer-scale platforms.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage incident response, collaborate across teams during outages, and drive follow-up improvements.

  • Effective cross-functional collaboration skills, including working closely with Product Management and partner engineering teams.

  • Experience building and developing distributed, remote engineering teams and fostering a healthy, high-performance team culture.

  • Ability to simplify and communicate complex systems and tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Background in computer science or equivalent practical experience in software engineering or infrastructure.

  • We’re open to candidates with diverse backgrounds and transferable skills who can demonstrate success in similar leadership and operational contexts.

About the team
