The Role

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to help us continue to scale our Business Applications Engineering team. Our managers take an active role in creating a productive environment for our engineers; be it through removing blockers, facilitating cross-team collaboration, or by aiding the team in helping themselves by constantly improving their working practices. You’ll be responsible for managing a team of distributed engineers working across a variety of systems and helping them to perform at their best. You report to the Director of IT.

Our Business Applications team is responsible for building and maintaining many of the internal systems that power Grafana Labs. The Business Applications team works together with our Cloud, Enterprise and Grafana teams along with our GTM and G&A organizations to provide the best possible experiences for our customers and most efficient workflows for our staff.  We build on the grafana.com platform to provide custom solutions and integrate with the many external systems that make up a modern business environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Have regular 1:1s with your team members to ensure they are motivated, happy, and engaged and meeting expectations

  • Coach and mentor engineers and peers

  • Provide continuous feedback to engineers to ensure that they can add value while maintaining high standards

  • Contribute to and review design documents, product DNAs, and delivery plans

  • Work with Product Management and User Experience to ensure features are well-defined and ready for development

  • Advise your team members how to reduce the scope of and plan features into small, manageable tasks

  • Coordinate with our User Experience team on how they can support your team's upcoming features

  • Collaborate with our Engineering Leaders to help define and influence product strategy and roadmaps

  • Work with our People Ops team to attract, retain, and hire talent

  • You will act as project manager as well as working with product owners to ensure the roadmap is defined and up-to-date

Requirements

  • You are comfortable working with engineering teams who have a strong sense of autonomy in their decision making, be it technical or product focussed

  • While you’re great with people and adept at managing relationships, you still keep up-to-date with the latest technical trends and shifts in order to maintain and enhance your understanding of the challenges your teams face

  • Ideally you will have a Computer Science degree or equivalent experience and have worked as a software engineer for at least 3 years before moving into management

  • Experience with some or all the following technologies: JavaScript/NodeJS, Golang, Kubernetes, React or Vue, SQL Databases

  • You have a solid understanding of modern web app development plus familiarity with API design, system architecture, Git, Linux, DevOps, and Observability and Monitoring

  • Experience in API integration with external systems like Salesforce, Zendesk, marketing tools like Marketo, Billing & Credit Card processing systems would be a plus.

In the United States, the Base compensation range for this role is CAD 174,409- CAD 209,000.  Actual compensation may vary based on level, experience, and skillset as assessed in the interview process. Benefits include equity, bonus (if applicable) and other benefits listed here.
