As StackAdapt’s first Employment Counsel, reporting to the General Counsel, you will both lead and play a supporting role in global employment matters for StackAdapt, including but not limited to the US, Canada, EMEA, LATAM and APAC employment matters (with the support of external counsel where required)

This position requires broad and deep employment law experience preferably as in-house counsel for companies with US multistate and global reach.

You will provide global counsel and service to our amazing People and Culture team, and work as their day to day partner. You will also provide global counsel and act as a strategic advisor to business leaders, and internal stakeholders. You will draft and lead the negotiation of various employment-related documents, and support other employment-law related matters, including employment and personnel related litigation, claims, and initiatives. This position requires creativity and an ability to work exceptionally collaboratively with others.

This is a rare and exciting opportunity that allows you to play a key role on an expanding Legal team at a high growth Canadian tech company, and to apply your leadership skills and vision to the role!

You will liaise with the executive team and the senior leadership team and work closely and collaboratively with all teams across StackAdapt.

StackAdapt is a Remote First company and you will work as part of a highly collaborative remote global Legal team.

This role is open to candidates located anywhere in Canada or the US. Occasional travel may be required.

What you'll be doing:

  • Collaborate with the General Counsel to develop and implement legal strategies across the business that support the company’s objectives as they relate to StackAdapt’s talent

  • Provide advice and counsel on employment related matters, such as employee relations, employee benefits, employment agreements, workplace policies, leaves of absence and disability accommodation

  • Lead, draft and negotiate employment-related documents (employment agreements, workplace policies, commission plans, etc.) and legal correspondence

  • Conduct or advise on the conduct of workplace investigations as needed

  • Support the People and Culture team on performance management, discipline, termination and other employee actions such as leaves of absence, and disability accommodation matters

  • Work closely with StackAdapt’s other teams, including Finance and Revenue globally on projects, and develop policies and practices to help the company scale

  • Manage employment-related litigation and potential or threatened disputes in partnership with the General Counsel and the People and Culture team

  •  Ensure compliance with applicable employment related laws, regulations, and policies

  • Manage outside counsel across multiple jurisdictions 

  • Responsible for keeping abreast of other current legislative developments that may have an impact on company operations 

  • Respond to regulatory inquiries and serve as a liaison with regulators in regulatory issues in coordination with other stakeholders as appropriate 

  • Provide thought leadership internally and externallyProvide leadership, mentorship and training to StackAdapters

What you'll bring to the table:

  • Practical, business-minded lawyer with at least 5+ years’ relevant employment law experience in an inhouse (or comparable) or reputable firm setting 

  • Juris Doctorate Degree or Equivalent Canadian or International Degree

  • Call to the Bar in one or more Canadian Provinces or one or more US states, with active license to practice law in such jurisdiction(s); US qualified candidates preferred  

  • Strong understanding of or interest in the AdTech/MarTech industry and technology; deep experience supporting technology platforms is a plus

  • A positive, collaborative spirit, and a learning mindset 

  • Adaptable, comfortable with ambiguity, and enjoy a fast-paced environment 

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously

  • Able to “own” and manage projects from beginning to end, with an internally driven sense of follow through

  • Professional maturity and integrity 

  • Excellent legal and business judgment and are comfortable balancing legal risks and business strategy 

  • Exceptional writing skills, strong attention to detail, and an ability to create original drafted documents

  • A desire to mentor and educate non-legal team members in a constructive and motivational way, consistent with StackAdapt culture and values
