Mapbox is the leading real-time location platform for a new generation of location-aware businesses. Mapbox is the only platform that equips organizations with the full set of tools to power the navigation of people, packages, and vehicles everywhere. More than 4 million registered developers have chosen Mapbox because of the platform’s flexibility, security and privacy compliance. Organizations use Mapbox applications, data, SDKs and APIs to create customized and immersive experiences that delight their customers.

What We Do

The Maps team at Mapbox sets the standard for dynamic, interactive mapping and real-time location data visualization on web and mobile. We manage the development of SDKs for web, Android, and iOS, 3D mapping experiences, and API services that help thousands of customers build world-class location-based experiences for 300 million daily users. For years, the Mapbox Maps team has pushed boundaries and led the location space with advancements like new performant tile formats, advanced methods of bringing real-time custom data to your maps, elegant 3D map rendering, and now AI tools where beautiful basemaps, functional map interactivity, and location-aware conversations converge. Of course, it’s our customers that make Mapbox truly special, including global leaders in their space like The Weather Company, AllTrails, DoorDash, BMW, TripAdvisor, Yahoo Japan and Tableau. From auto to on-demand logistics, outdoors to weather, real estate to BI, we’re constantly working with them to improve the product and revolutionize how people engage with location experiences.

What You'll Do

As the Director of Product for Maps, you will be responsible for driving the vision and strategy for the Maps product portfolio. This product portfolio enables developers to serve over 650M global MAUs through high-performance APIs and client libraries that serve dynamic maps, customizable styles, and interactive interfaces in the most well-known consumer applications worldwide. This set of products is often our customers’ first entry point to the Mapbox platform and solutions.

You will envision, coordinate, and align the roadmap across multiple products and teams to drive a consistent map rendering, design, and customization experience for our customers, from novice users who want really intuitive, yet powerful defaults, to power users who want the flexibility to customize their maps in real-time based on their users and environment. You’ll dive deep into the nuances of digital mapping, keeping a clear eye on how we can simplify development of geospatial applications, abstract away unnecessary complexity from our customers, and invent on behalf of our customers to reimagine end-user experiences.

You will obsess over both quantitative and qualitative metrics that help define the success of your product portfolio and teams. You will lead a collaborative team that will look to you as a partner in thinking big, validating growth opportunities, and executing with conviction. As a leader, you will help the team execute with focus, enabling them to deliver their best work. Though prior technical experience is not required, being able to stretch technically and understand complex systems will be helpful.

What’s Important for this Role:

  • 10+ years of product leadership experience.

  • Conceptualized and delivered consumer-oriented or consumer-facing products.

  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to establish an ambitious yet realistic product roadmap and effectively communicate this vision to customers and the organization.

  • Experience in a high-accountability environment, with the ability to build, operationalize, and scale technically distributed organizations (engineering, product, design, data scientists, etc.).

  • Ability to think strategically in a high-growth and fast-paced business, building conviction through data, analysis, reasoning, and experimentation.

  • Demonstrated ability to drive go-to-market strategies that have resulted in successful product adoption and revenue generation.

  • Experience with profit and loss responsibility for a business unit.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with the development of generative AI applications

  • 5+ years as a PM. You have seen a significant product through a full lifecycle of discovery, development, launch, and adoption. Experience with deprecating/failing a product is a plus, but potential is what's most important.

  • Experience working with design tools and/or frontend applications, working with cross-functional teams to deliver frontend products.

What We Value

In addition to our core values, which are not unique to this position and are necessary for Mapbox leaders:

  • We value high-performing creative individuals who dig into problems and opportunities.

  • We believe in individuals being their whole selves at work. We commit to this through supportive health care, parental leave, flexibility for the things that come up in life, and innovating on how we think about supporting our people.

  • We emphasize an environment of teaching and learning to equip employees with the tools needed to be successful in their function and the company.

  • We strongly believe in the value of growing a diverse team and encourage people of all backgrounds, genders, ethnicities, abilities, and sexual orientations to apply.

Our annual base compensation for this role ranges from $262,225 - $344,775 for most US locations and 5% to 10% higher for US locations with a higher cost of labor. Job level and actual compensation will be decided based on factors including, but not limited to, individual qualifications objectively assessed during the interview process (including skills and prior relevant experience, potential impact, and scope of role), market demands, and specific work location. Please discuss your specific work location with your recruiter for more information.

By applying for this position, you acknowledge that you agree to the Mapbox Privacy Policy which is linked here.
