Job Overview
We are seeking a Design Director to join our passionate design team in creating world-class social user experiences across multiple platforms. This design leader will have strong operational experience, and will be responsible for driving excellence and a best-in-class design process for the team. The Design Director is a critical leadership role, accountable for mentoring designers, and fostering a culture of creativity, collaboration, and continuous learning. As a senior leader on the team, the Design Director will work collaboratively with design leads and product and engineering to help define the company’s product vision and execution, and setting a high bar for craft and delight in our products.
The role reports into the VP of Design at VRChat, and will work closely with other design team leads as well as stakeholders on the executive leadership team, the heads of various functions, and periodically interact with the VRChat Board of Directors.
Duties and Responsibilities
Lead design operations, partnering closely with the VP of Design and Head of Production to make sure the team is operating efficiently and maintaining a high quality bar.
Oversee design reviews, crits and sprints for the wider team helping to maintain a consistent process for a high functioning team.
Mentor and inspire a high-performing design function, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and excellence.
Collaborate on strategic direction and design vision, ensuring alignment with company objectives.
Stay abreast of industry trends, design methodologies, and emerging technologies to chart the course for industry-leading design excellence.
Collaborate closely with product management and engineering teams to drive the delivery of delightful and intuitive user interfaces.
Champion the importance of design thinking throughout the organization.
Experience, Skills, and Qualifications
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field or equivalent work experience
Proven experience (5+ years) in a senior design leadership role (with management experience), in a high growth consumer facing company, preferably in a fast-paced startup environment.
Demonstrated success in building and leading high-performing design teams.
Strong portfolio showcasing a range of design leadership, including product design, branding, and user interfaces.
In-depth knowledge of design principles, trends, and emerging technologies.
Exceptional communication skills with the ability to articulate and evangelize design concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Ideally can demonstrate experience and proficiency in leading/designing for cross-platform products, including spatial and 3D environments and tools.
Ideally has driven creation, maintenance, and governance of robust design systems and UI frameworks.
