Liberty Mutual’s Global Legal & Compliance Department’s (Global Legal) Strategic Counsel & Litigation Management group (SCLM) has an exciting opportunity available for a highly motivated and qualified Attorney to work in our Outside Counsel Partnerships (OCP) group. The successful candidate will work closely with national law firms on our managed law firm panels, other internal Global Legal department teams, and our Claims organization to provide advice and/or oversight regarding the delivery of legal services, litigation management, legal spend, and firm management. The attorney will carry out actions which have an impact upon the rights, privileges and responsibilities of the Company while maintaining high standards of legal and business ethics and professional responsibility.
Please note typical starting salary for the role is $155,000-$188,000 and is based on geographical location and experience.
This position may have in-office requirement depending on candidate's location.
Responsibilities:
- Provide legal advice, guidance, and recommendations on all aspects of litigation management to the Company, including actionable strategies to enhance litigated case outcomes and cost control and oversight, analysis, and management of law firms to drive innovative solutions
- Performance oversight of national firms and managed panels, including multi-dimensional scorecard assessment, KPI reviews, capability assessments, action plan development & execution to drive optimal legal expertise and adherence to best practices, protocols, and SLAs
- Performance oversight of national firms and managed panels, including addressing strategic use and handling, panel placement and composition by lines of business, venue, and expertise, firm selection, onboarding, cybersecurity assessments, technological capabilities, and removal
- Negotiating competitive pricing by conducting competitive rate analysis and negotiation, holistic state analysis, Alternative Fee Arrangement development & negotiation and discount program analysis and implementation
- Legal consultation to address outside counsel issues, including conducting analysis and developing strategy to handle complex issues (e.g., legal malpractice, Tort Reform, Legal System Abuse, case mishandling, independent counsel, and other legal & litigation matters)
- Partnering with Claims, Underwriting, Global Legal, and other stakeholders on complex and routine legal issues and unique panel projects and strategic alignment, providing legal guidance on litigation management issues, analysis of firm performance, and negotiation of complex disputes and formulating strategy
- Regular use of metrics and legal analytics to help advise strategy, drive quality legal services, savings, and opportunities on legal handling, spend, and outcomes
- This position provides frequent opportunities to interface with Liberty employees and managers at various levels across the Liberty organization
- The successful candidate must possess high standards of legal and business ethics, litigation experience, and professional responsibility
- Participate in multiple SCLM, Claims, and Global Legal department strategic initiatives
- Solid communication and presentation skills
- Heightened knowledge of defense and insurance litigation
- Maintain current knowledge of legal issues and developments in the law
- Completion of law school with a J.D. or L.L.B. degree and admission to the bar of at least one jurisdiction in the United States required
- Generally, requires at least five years’ experience as a practicing attorney experienced in all aspects of litigation, including trials
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Experienced in complex and non-complex negotiations, including throughout all phases of case handling
- Direct client/stakeholder exposure required
- Demonstrated ability to conduct research and analysis of legal issues
- Strong understanding of business and firm metrics and analytics
- Comprehensive understanding of insurance claims and operations, as well as underwriting principles
- Heightened knowledge of insurance defense litigation
- Preferred experience in litigation management, including oversight of attorney/firm quality handling of cases
- Maintain current knowledge of legal issues and developments in the law
Pay Philosophy: The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
