Desired Length of Contract: 3 months (temporary)
Payment Terms: This role requires a commitment of approximately 20 to 25 hours per week, flexibly distributed to accommodate project demands and personal schedules. The budget is approximately $35-$45 per hour.

Blue Star Families (BSF) is a national nonprofit dedicated to supporting military families by providing programming and resources while strengthening their connections to their local communities. We partner with businesses, government agencies, and local organizations to create impactful programs that empower and uplift military families.
Independent Contractor Engagement Terms:
This independent contractor will be retained solely for project-based, outcome-driven services and will not be an employee, agent, or representative of Blue Star Families. The independent contractor:
Will provide their own tools, equipment, and software necessary for completing deliverables.
Is responsible for determining work methods, scheduling, and location of work.
Maintains full control over how services are executed.
Will invoice BSF on agreed terms and is responsible for their own tax obligations, insurance, and business expenses.
May perform work for other clients and is not subject to BSF employee policies or supervision.
Project Based Scope of Work
Organizational History Documentation: Research and develop written materials that document the history of Blue Star Families, including major milestones, achievements, and impactful narratives. Deliverables may include curated timelines, legacy content for publication, and archival summaries.
'Do Your Part' Campaign Content Development: Create written and visual content supporting the 'Do Your Part' campaign, including (but not limited to) slide decks, one-pagers, promotional copy, and suggested website content. The contractor may also provide suggested tracking formats for honorary committee and advisory council activities.
Briefing and Presentation Materials: Draft talking points, briefing documents, and presentation materials (e.g., slide content, outlines) for distribution to internal and external stakeholders, based on campaign and event objectives.
Partner Impact Storytelling: Produce written stories that highlight the success of Blue Star Families’ partnerships, drawing from interviews, impact data, and program highlights. Content may be used across digital platforms, press, and reports.
Additional Writing Projects: On an as-needed basis, develop original written content as assigned and mutually agreed upon by Blue Star Families and the contractor. Projects may vary by campaign, seasonal need, or program focus.
Preferred Qualifications
Proven experience as a freelance writer, journalist, or content creator (3+ years preferred)
Strong portfolio showcasing persuasive, narrative, and informational writing
Ability to conduct independent research and interviews
Proficiency in writing for both digital and print formats
Familiarity with military families, nonprofit communications, or cause-based storytelling a plus
Skilled in using collaborative tools (e.g., Google Workspace, project management software) while maintaining autonomy
Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously
Deliverables & Payment Terms
All services shall be delivered in accordance with agreed deadlines and milestones. Payment structure to be outlined in a separate contract. BSF shall not direct how services are performed — only that deliverables meet agreed results.
