As Staff Software Engineer V, you will work across two teams on all things automation for PagerDuty. This is an exciting opportunity to drive automation architecture across the enterprise. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Java, AWS, Kubernetes, and SaaS experience in large scale environments.

PagerDuty Workflow Automation enables enterprise teams to automate end-to-end incident response and operational workflows, significantly enhancing reliability, reducing incident response times, and driving operational excellence. This product integrates seamlessly across the PagerDuty platform and external systems, empowering teams to rapidly manage complex workflows at scale and proactively address issues before they impact customers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define and lead the technical vision, architecture, and strategic direction for PagerDuty Workflow Automation, driving cross-domain initiatives and aligning them with company-wide strategic goals.

  • Architect and deliver complex technical solutions spanning multiple engineering teams, ensuring scalability, reliability, maintainability, and performance.

  • Collaborate closely with engineering management, product leadership, and cross-functional stakeholders to proactively identify critical technology investments required for long-term growth.

  • Act as a recognized technical leader and subject matter expert in SaaS development, workflow automation systems, and cloud-native architectures (AWS), proactively mentoring senior engineers and fostering a culture of technical excellence.

  • Own the end-to-end lifecycle of technology initiatives—from inception and prototyping to implementation and long-term operational excellence—providing technical oversight and strategic guidance.

  • Drive continuous improvement in engineering practices, processes, and tools, enhancing team productivity, system reliability, and overall customer experience.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 12 years of professional software development experience with substantial experience in a technical leadership role, driving large-scale projects across multiple teams.

  • Must have experience working with large systems or event-driven platforms at enterprise-scale.

  • Demonstrated expertise designing, implementing, and operating scalable SaaS solutions leveraging Java, Node.js, TypeScript, RESTful APIs, microservices architecture, and AWS cloud services (ECS/EKS, Lambda, DynamoDB, API Gateway).

  • Expert-level knowledge of DevOps methodologies including infrastructure-as-code (Terraform/CloudFormation), CI/CD tooling (GitHub Actions/Jenkins), observability monitoring (Datadog/Prometheus), and containerization/orchestration (Docker/Kubernetes).

  • Proven track record of successfully delivering strategic cross-domain technical initiatives that align with broader business objectives.

  • Extensive experience influencing engineering direction across teams, setting technical roadmaps, and providing mentorship for senior engineers.

  • Ability and willingness to participate in PagerDuty's on-call rotation as a leader of mission-critical systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Deep expertise in building complex workflow automation systems or event-driven platforms at enterprise scale.

  • Experience defining system-level Service Level Objectives (SLOs), performance metrics, and operational excellence standards across large-scale systems.

  • Recognized thought leadership within the industry, including presentations at conferences or contributions to open-source projects.

  • Proven ability to effectively communicate with executive leadership, aligning technical strategy with broader organizational goals.
