About Design at Gusto:

Product Design at Gusto is made up of over 70 creative, collaborative people who care deeply about our mission to empower small businesses and their employees. We’re a cross-functional bunch focused on Design, Research, Writing, Ops and Front-end Development who are always looking for opportunities to build understanding and empathy for the people who use Gusto. We don’t care a whole lot about swim lanes and we work closely with our partners in Product, Engineering, Data, and Marketing to design, build and ship experiences that make a difference. We are passionate advocates for thoughtful, crafted, and inclusive experiences and we believe great design can make hard things possible, even delightful. Read more about Design at Gusto.

About the team:

The Consumer Money team elevates the value of work and the impact of income for our users. We craft financial tools designed to empower individuals paid through our platform, offering them greater control, increased confidence, and more money from every hard-earned paycheck. Growing from a startup team to a scaled organization, our team not only supports millions of users, but also drives millions of dollars in ARR. As critical contributors to Gusto’s rapidly evolving financial services offerings, we sustain and expand multiple product lines geared towards enhancing our customers' financial lives by making a tangible difference in how people manage and perceive their finances.

About the opportunity:

As a Staff Product Designer on Consumer Money, you’ll shape the future of our business by designing new 0–1 financial products that will help workers thrive financially. You’ll craft intuitive, high-quality experiences, balancing rapid experimentation with thoughtful design. You’ll be responsible for both building brand-new experiences as well as guiding the work of our external partners, often charting new paths where none exist. Working closely with cross-functional partners across Product, Engineering, and BizDev, you’ll influence strategy, drive alignment, and deliver exceptional outcomes in ambiguous, fast-moving spaces. If you’re a strategic, entrepreneurial designer who thrives in ambiguity and loves tackling complex problems to create meaningful new experiences, we’d love to hear from you! This role reports to the Head of Design for New Revenue Streams.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Partner with cross-functional partners to define a long-term UX vision and how it ladders into Gusto’s broader strategy.

  • Shape product strategy, roadmap, team OKRs, and project priorities through a design lens.

  • Deepen our understanding of customer needs through research, data, and hands-on discovery.

  • Design and ship both new and iterative experiences that consistently deliver value and raise the craft bar.

  • Facilitate relationships with our external partners, and guide their design teams.

  • Contribute to Gusto’s design community by sharing your skills, perspective, and mentorship.

  • Champion our design system and platform standards, evolving them through your product work.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 8+ years of Product Design experience, with a track record of leading design direction across teams and product areas.

  • You are experienced in designing simple, intuitive solutions in complex or technical domains—ideally in fintech, platforms, or services.

  • You partner closely with PM and Eng to shape both roadmaps and system-level decisions, ultimately ensuring better outcomes.

  • You have a high bar for craft, and stay hands-on to ensure thoughtful, high-impact solutions reach customers.

  • You think holistically, designing cohesive customer journeys that span digital products and human support touchpoints.

  • You thrive in ambiguity, lead through action, and are motivated by seeing real customer impact—not just shaping plans or decks.

  • You bring strong opinions held loosely, engage in constructive debate, and help teams align quickly.

  • You care deeply about Gusto’s mission and are passionate about empowering small businesses through world-class financial tools.

Our cash compensation range for this role is $146,000/yr to $183,000/yr in Denver & most remote locations, and $177,000/yr to $222,000/yr in San Francisco, Seattle & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, and may vary from the amounts listed above.
