What You'll Do

As a Software Development Engineer III on the MapGPT team, you will be responsible for balancing rapid development of new mapping tools against the reliability of our services as they scale into new request volumes, markets, and use cases.

In this role, you can expect to:

  • Lead the MapGPT engineering team to identify and scope out well-defined tasks.

  • Execute on the scope and be accountable for delivering on time with quality.

  • Design systems and make architectural decisions that will keep pace with the rapid growth of Mapbox’s customer base.

  • Mentor your peers through 1:1s, facilitating design and code reviews, and providing continuous guidance to foster professional growth and technical excellence.

  • Promote a culture of operational excellence by meticulously testing and monitoring our systems and code, writing documentation, and being on-call to support the health of our services.

  • Reduce technical debt, share your knowledge, and invest in your teammates’ health and happiness, while optimizing application performance and accelerating feature velocity.

  • Uphold a culture of collaboration, transparency, creativity, inclusion, and data-driven decisions.

What We Believe are Important Traits for This Role

  •  8-10+ years of engineering experience: Extensive hands-on experience showcasing expertise and a strong track record in the field.

  • Technical domain knowledge: Extensive experience coding in a variety of languages such as Python, Typescript (backend), and/or Java.

  • Cloud proficiency: Extensive experience building scalable modern cloud infrastructure on either AWS, Azure, or GCP.

  • Operational excellence: You drive a culture of quality and continuous improvement in your organization. Strong passion for clean code and robust architecture, with a drive to elevate engineering practices and design standards across the team.

  • LLMs: Experience building an LLM application.

  • Mentorship: Strong desire to work with, mentor, and lead individuals with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.

  • Customer focus: You care deeply about your customers and their problems, and you work tirelessly to innovate on their behalf.

  • Growth mindset: Have the humility to accept mistakes, learn and grow from them.

  • Strong written and vocal communication skills: You can talk and write about complex ideas concisely to a wide audience.

  • Data informed mindset: You believe in the value of data informed decision making and strive to measure things that are not straight forward but essential.

  • High standards for work: You drive a culture of quality on the teams you work with and know how to drive healthy tension between quality and velocity.

Valuable But Not Required Experience

  • Background in Natural Language Processing (NLP), Linguistics, or related domain or field of study.

  • Experience fine tuning LLMs and/or running self-hosted LLMs.

  • Experience with low latency voice applications.

What We Value

In addition to our core values, which are not unique to this position and are necessary for Mapbox leaders:

  • We value high-performing creative individuals who dig into problems and opportunities.

  • We believe in individuals being their whole selves at work. We commit to this through supportive health care, parental leave, flexibility for the things that come up in life, and innovating on how we think about supporting our people.

  • We emphasize an environment of teaching and learning to equip employees with the tools needed to be successful in their function and the company.

  • We strongly believe in the value of growing a diverse team and encourage people of all backgrounds, genders, ethnicities, abilities, and sexual orientations to apply.
