What You'll Do
As a Software Development Engineer III on the MapGPT team, you will be responsible for balancing rapid development of new mapping tools against the reliability of our services as they scale into new request volumes, markets, and use cases.
In this role, you can expect to:
Lead the MapGPT engineering team to identify and scope out well-defined tasks.
Execute on the scope and be accountable for delivering on time with quality.
Design systems and make architectural decisions that will keep pace with the rapid growth of Mapbox’s customer base.
Mentor your peers through 1:1s, facilitating design and code reviews, and providing continuous guidance to foster professional growth and technical excellence.
Promote a culture of operational excellence by meticulously testing and monitoring our systems and code, writing documentation, and being on-call to support the health of our services.
Reduce technical debt, share your knowledge, and invest in your teammates’ health and happiness, while optimizing application performance and accelerating feature velocity.
Uphold a culture of collaboration, transparency, creativity, inclusion, and data-driven decisions.
What We Believe are Important Traits for This Role
8-10+ years of engineering experience: Extensive hands-on experience showcasing expertise and a strong track record in the field.
Technical domain knowledge: Extensive experience coding in a variety of languages such as Python, Typescript (backend), and/or Java.
Cloud proficiency: Extensive experience building scalable modern cloud infrastructure on either AWS, Azure, or GCP.
Operational excellence: You drive a culture of quality and continuous improvement in your organization. Strong passion for clean code and robust architecture, with a drive to elevate engineering practices and design standards across the team.
LLMs: Experience building an LLM application.
Mentorship: Strong desire to work with, mentor, and lead individuals with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.

Valuable But Not Required Experience
Background in Natural Language Processing (NLP), Linguistics, or related domain or field of study.
Experience fine tuning LLMs and/or running self-hosted LLMs.
Experience with low latency voice applications.

Our annual base compensation for this role ranges from $190,825 - $258,175 for most US locations and 5% to 10% higher for US locations with a higher cost of labor. Job level and actual compensation will be decided based on factors including, but not limited to, individual qualifications objectively assessed during the interview process (including skills and prior relevant experience, potential impact, and scope of role), market demands, and specific work location.
