Senior UX Prototyper (Contract)

Summary

The Product Design team at the Wikimedia Foundation is responsible for building and maintaining the user experience for Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. The team requires a UX Prototyper for a four month coverage. 

Statement of Purpose

The Wikimedia Foundation’s Product Design team is looking for an experienced UX Prototyper to support the Moderator Tools team, who works on improving Wikimedia's content moderation processes for users with extended rights.

The contract is for 4 months as leave coverage for the team’s designer, with expected start date in January 2026. This is a fully remote position with an initial 1 month trial period. 

Scope of Work/Commitments

This person will contribute to a key project prioritized by the Moderator Tools team in this year’s annual plan: designing and building high-fidelity, code-based prototypes to explore and validate workflows for the Moderator Homepage.

They will be required to join team meetings on both their product and functional design teams, and share their design work for critique on a regular basis at Design team reviews. 

Deliverables/Responsibilities

  • Develop interactive prototypes aligned with product vision, leveraging live data and strong interaction principles.

  • Run iterative experiments: define hypotheses and success criteria, prototype, test with users, and synthesize results.

  • Work with product and design to prototype and iterate on intelligent workflows and user interactions.

  • Distill complex concepts into easy to understand talking points to engage with our communities throughout the design process.

  • Liaise and confer with the Product Design team to ensure prototypes are aligned and consistent with our design system and guidelines.

  • Document and provide clear handover materials to the returning Moderator Tools designer.

Skills

  • Designs and builds web-based, production-adjacent prototypes to explore future vision and flows for the Moderator Homepage.

  • Fluent in code for product-quality prototypes, modern web stack (TypeScript/JavaScript, React or Vue, HTML/CSS).

  • Has a strong creative vision and the ability to switch from blue sky ideation to tactical thinking to execute and test new ideas efficiently to deliver work in the present.

  • Shares their work and ideas beyond their own team, and enjoys engaging with the global design community.

  • Experience mentoring other designers on design prototyping whilst welcoming feedback from others. 

  • Portfolio showcasing a range of technical skills, a creative use of code, and prototyping skills

  • 5+ years of experience contributing on design teams

  • Bachelor's degree and/or Masters degree, or equivalent in related work experience

The compensation for a successful applicant will be based on their skills, experience and location.
