Senior Software Engineer - Automated Mosaics
About the Role:
The Automated Mosaics team is responsible for producing Planet’s Mosaic (or “Basemap”) products. We combine image processing and engineering expertise to create spatially and temporally consistent views of Earth at a global scale. Our products are used by the entire range of Planet’s customers, including commercial, civil government, defense and intelligence, research, and nonprofit applications. Our data products are used in applications such as Global Renewables Watch, deforestation monitoring, ecosystem monitoring, and permit enforcement. Our tools are also used by other teams at Planet in the creation of their own products. Engineers on the Automated Mosaics team partner with other teams at Planet who maintain compute infrastructure, acquire and QC data from our satellites, and process individual images.
As a Senior Software Engineer on the Automated Mosaics team, you will play a key role in maintaining and improving Planet’s Mosaic products. You will improve the mosaicing algorithm to provide better data for our customers. You will ensure that data production scales reliably and efficiently to the global scale of our products. You will own the systems which decide which data to produce and when. You will propose future development directions for the team, informed by your knowledge of product requirements and technical capabilities, and you will mentor other engineers on the team and represent the Mosaics team in interactions with other teams.
This is a full-time, remote position based in the United States or Canada. If located near an office, you are expected to work from that office 3 days per week.
Impact You'll Own:
Maintain and improve the image processing algorithms which create Planet’s Mosaic products.
Ensure that data production runs reliably and efficiently at global scale.
Ensure that data requested by our customers is available when needed.
Represent the Mosaics team in discussions with teams both upstream (handling individual image acquisition and processing) and downstream (delivering data to customers or using mosaic machinery for other Planet products) to ensure high image quality and smooth delivery.
Contribute to planning the team’s technical direction
Mentor other engineers
What You Bring:
Bachelor’s degree with 6+ years of experience in a related field
Expert in scientific Python development
Familiarity with both image processing methods and geospatial algorithms and data
Experience running workloads at scale in production
Excellent written communication skills to support asynchronous remote collaboration
Experience with long-term software project management
Experience with collaborative coding tools such as GitHub or GitLab
Experience with mentoring other engineers
Ability and willingness to quickly learn new skills as needed
