Senior Manager of HR Programs
About the company:
The mining industry has steadily become worse at finding new ore deposits, requiring >10X more capital to make discoveries compared to 30 years ago. The easy-to-find, near-surface deposits have largely been found, and the industry has chronically under-invested in new exploration technology, relying on the manual techniques of yesteryear – even as demand accelerates for copper, lithium, and other metals to build electric vehicles, renewable energy, and data centers.
KoBold builds AI models for mineral exploration and deploys those models—alongside our novel sensors—to guide decisions on KoBold-owned-and-operated exploration programs. In the six years since founding, KoBold has become by far both the largest independent mineral exploration company and the largest exploration technology developer. Our data scientists and software engineers, who come from leading technology companies, jointly lead exploration programs with our renowned exploration geologists.
KoBold has proven its first discovery with materially less capital than the industry average and found one of the best copper deposits ever discovered: the copper is far more concentrated than the global average of copper mines, and this asset alone is expected to generate meaningful revenue for decades. KoBold has a portfolio of more than 60 other projects, each of which has the potential for another high-quality discovery.
KoBold is privately held; investors include institutional asset managers T. Rowe Price and Canada Pension Plan Investments; technology venture capitalists Andreessen Horowitz, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, BOND Capital, and Standard Investments; and natural resources companies Equinor, BHP, and Mitsubishi.
About The Role:
We are looking for a Senior Manager of HR Programs to work alongside the Chief People Officer, Clara Kridler, on the challenges that come with scaling a global workforce from under 100 employees two years ago to over 220 as of the drafting of this job description and into the future as we manage dozens of prospective and producing mining sites. The right candidate will come with first-hand experience navigating the challenges of establishing sophisticated processes, programs, and tooling that increase efficiency without increasing bureaucracy. These programs must thoughtfully contemplate the various cultural underpinnings and job responsibilities of the employees who work at KoBold.
This hire will be successful if they build solutions that honor and preserve the ethos of KoBold. To do so, they must first establish a deep understanding of the science and business along with how we work together. There are no curriculum or shortcuts to learning KoBold. To be an effective architect of our People programs, processes, and tooling, you must be insatiably curious about the various activities and pursuits at KoBold.
Days will be varied, the problem space may be ambiguous, and the path ahead will feel intimidating at times; this will energize our Senior Manager of HR Programs.
Responsibilities
Contribute to and sometimes lead the evolution of our core People programs (compensation, performance management, onboarding, etc.)
Support organizational change initiatives by designing people-centered communication and transition strategies
Reduce manual work throughout HR
Increase data-derived insights and action plans
Improve the employee experience and rate of learning
Partner with leaders to solve talent and management-related issues
Endlessly seek ways to make our teams more effective at collaborating and socializing their work
Improve cohesion across our geographically fragmented organization
Qualifications
8+ years in People Operations, People Programs, or HRBP roles, preferably in tech or science-based environments
Better than any other HR person you have worked with at Excel
Exceptional project management and communication skills
First-principles thinker who can reference best practices without defaulting to them
Intellectual curiosity and eagerness to learn about all aspects of mineral exploration, particularly in the geology domain. Enjoys constantly learning such that you are driving insights through using our tools in exploration and eager to work directly with geologists in the field
Excitement about joining a fast-growing early-stage company, comfort with a dynamic work environment, and eagerness to take on an evolving range of responsibilities
Nice to have: Hands-on Workday experience (reporting, configuration, integrations)
