Most likely, almost everything you own arrived here in a container on a container ship. It is a massive industry that we all rely on but don’t think about much because it’s been done the same way for decades without much change or innovation. Our client is a well-funded Series B startup, developing a brand-new concept that will transform and enable an industry plagued with inefficiency, volatility, and $23b of economic waste annually. The client's team is passionate about collaborating with the world’s leading ocean carriers, shippers, and forwarders to bring technology and innovation to this industry we love, and we hope that you will be part of building this new digital foundation that will have lasting effects for years to come.
As a DevOps Engineer, you will build, manage and support the technology infrastructure necessary to support the client's technology platform. You will use AWS, Terraform, and other technologies to build a scalable, efficient infrastructure for our platform. You will create, implement and improve on monitoring, alerts, and security practices. You will collaborate with our Engineering and other teams to ensure that we are making the best strategic decisions as it pertains to our technology infrastructure and technology operations practices.
In this role, you will:
Build, manage and support highly resilient, scalable microservice-based systems to support business needs
Build and deploy infrastructure in AWS, using infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform and Packer
Manage Services ranging from RDS Postgres Databases, to GitHub Actions, to Kafka MQ and all points in between
Develop and improve monitoring and incident alerting systems as part of a comprehensive approach to outages and site performance
Collaborate with engineers on overall system architecture while considering availability, scaling, and maintainability
Constantly work to identify and mitigate security concerns, performance gaps, and scalability bottlenecks
Contribute to formal development and adoption of organizational policies
What will help you succeed
3+ years of hands-on experience building, managing, and scaling 24/7 cloud infrastructures, using both AWS and Terraform
5+ years of Linux Systems Engineering experience
Knowledge of Unix Principles and tools such as grep, awk, sed. AWS CLI.
Solid Database skills – RDS, Postgres
Scripting in Python & shell scripts
Containerization (Docker) and container orchestration services (ECS, Kubernetes, etc.)
Java Application Severs (in a microservices architecture environment)
Messaging Systems – Kafka, Zookeeper
A thorough knowledge of networking, CDNs, and load balancing ELB
Monitoring – DataDog, CloudWatch, Nagios
Strong command of system security and resiliency designs and best practices
Experience contributing to implementation of infrastructure and security policies and procedures. Auditing, SOC2.
A solid mix of initiative, imagination, and work ethic
Understanding what it takes to work at a start-up, including the need to ‘wear multiple hats’, being proactive with issues that are discovered
