JOB SUMMARY 

Code.org is looking for an experienced and creative product designer! In this remote-friendly contract position, you will join the design team and work across multiple departments to help solve exciting design challenges related to our student experiences, accessibility, and design system. Your work will have the potential to reach millions of students and teachers worldwide! 


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

What You'll Do:

  • Assist with UX, UI, and graphic design needs for Code.org

  • Design tools, tutorials, and development environments used for teaching and learning computer science (grades K-12)

  • Assist with marketing and branding assets, as needed

  • Assist with design system and component library development

  • Conduct user testing virtually and in-person, as needed


You will need to be comfortable working on a small design team, designing solutions independently and collaboratively, thinking creatively to solve problems, and communicating your design ideas and rationale, both verbally and visually. As part of the team, you will be depended upon to be present and responsive during core operating hours (10am-2pm pacific time). You will need to be a strong communicator and an active contributor in meetings, e-mail threads, and Slack channels related to the work required for this role. We are looking for at least a 3-6 month commitment, 40 hours per week/8 hours per day, aligned with standard North America working hours.


EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

We seek candidates who have:

  • 5+ years of UX/UI experience on consumer facing websites or apps with a portfolio reflecting that experience

  • Proficient using Figma and Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator

  • A firm grasp on gestalt principles of design, information architecture, and standard methodologies for web and mobile

  • Experience designing for responsive design, localization, and accessibility

  • A portfolio of at least 3-6 pieces that demonstrates relevantl design skills

  • Familiar with the principles and applications of interaction design

  • Ability to communicate with engineers, product managers, and marketing team to create solutions that are effective and technically feasible

  • Amazing Slack and video-conferencing etiquette

  • Ability to hop into a team and get up to speed quickly 

  • Illustration skills or design system experience are a plus


We prefer candidates who also have:

  • Experience in Education or Ed Tech field

  • Experience building and managing a design system

  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, interaction design, fine arts, or a related subject area 


In addition, candidates:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident

  • Must pass a pre-employment background check


WHAT IS THE INTERVIEW PROCESS LIKE?


Step 1: Informational (30 minutes) - learn more about the role and share your experience
Step 2: Three interviews with members of the Product, Engineering, and Curriculum teams (2-3 hours)
*There will be a design challenge to be completed during one of the interviews
Step 3: Final Interview with CPO and Principal Product Designer (~1 hour)
Step 4: Reference Checks


All interviews are currently being conducted virtually via Zoom
