Role Summary:
HubSpot is undergoing an AI-first transformation, building an AI-native platform that helps millions of customers grow better—and faster. As Principal Counsel, Product for Internal AI & Flywheel Product, you’ll partner with the teams defining how HubSpot builds, governs, and scales AI. You’ll turn complex AI, privacy, and data realities into business advantage—helping our product, engineering, and design teams ship ambitious, customer-trusted experiences with confidence and speed. This is a high-impact, high-autonomy role where your counsel directly shapes the technology that powers our Flywheel platform and our customers’ success.
What You’ll Do
Lead legal strategy for HubSpot’s Internal AI, Flywheel, and Marketing Tech products—offering proactive, business-forward counsel from concept to launch.
Advise on AI and data usage, ensuring responsible innovation across personalization, automation, and enrichment features.
Shape data governance frameworks for ingestion, quality, retention, access and deletion, balancing privacy, customer trust, and innovation.
Embed global privacy and AI regulations (GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, emerging AI laws) into scalable product design and operations.
Partner early and cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, Design, Data Science, and Security teams to enable smart trade-offs and accelerate delivery.
Create scalable enablement tools—playbooks, guardrails, templates, and training—that empower teams to make confident decisions that solve complex problems but are aligned with legal guidance.
Elevate transparency and trust by collaborating with product marketing, communications, and customer-facing teams to shape clear, consistent messaging about AI and data use.
Mentor and influence peers across Legal and Product teams, sharing frameworks that strengthen decision-making company-wide.
Run proactive risk reviews to anticipate and mitigate AI, privacy, and data challenges before they surface.
Champion innovation with integrity, setting the bar for trusted AI practices in SaaS.
What You’ll Bring
Required Qualifications
10+ years of experience advising on product, privacy, and data issues in fast-paced, high-growth SaaS or technology companies.
Deep expertise in global privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA/CPRA) and privacy-by-design implementation.
Demonstrated experience advising on AI and data-driven product development, ideally in marketing or business software contexts.
Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal issues to technical and non-technical audiences.
Strategic thinker with an operational mindset—able to scale guidance through systems and enablement tools.
Exceptional judgment and ability to balance legal risk with innovation and business needs.
JD degree and active bar membership in good standing (any U.S. state).
Nice-to-Have Qualifications
Experience advising on enterprise data systems, Business Intelligence platforms, or analytics tools.
Familiarity with AI ethics, model evaluation, or transparency frameworks.
Certifications such as CIPP, CIPM, or equivalent privacy credentials.
Experience mentoring legal professionals or leading cross-functional enablement.
Technical fluency or experience working directly with engineers and designers.

Pay & Benefits
The cash compensation below includes base salary, on-target commission for employees in eligible roles, and annual bonus targets under HubSpot’s bonus plan for eligible roles. In addition to cash compensation, some roles are eligible to participate in HubSpot’s equity plan to receive restricted stock units (RSUs). Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay. Individual compensation packages are tailored to your skills, experience, qualifications, and other job-related reasons.
