Principal Counsel, Product — Data Hub & Platform

Role Summary

HubSpot is building a platform millions of people love—and we’re looking for a Principal Counsel who’s as passionate about innovation as they are about data. As a key senior member of our Product Legal team, you’ll be the trusted partner guiding how data moves, scales, and powers HubSpot’s core platform. You’ll lead complex, cross-functional work at the intersection of law, data, and product design, helping our teams make confident decisions that drive growth while staying compliant. If you thrive on turning complexity into clarity, this role is for you.

What You’ll Do

  • Serve as lead counsel for HubSpot’s core Smart CRM and Data Hub ecosystem, providing proactive, product-embedded legal guidance across the full development lifecycle.

  • Advise on data interoperability, AI integration, and privacy-by-design within multi-tenant SaaS environments.

  • Shape and scale frameworks for data governance, privacy, and partner ecosystem policies that accelerate safe product innovation.

  • Draft, negotiate, and counsel on a wide range of commercial and technical agreements, including HubSpot’s Terms of Service and data use policies.

  • Lead cross-functional initiatives connecting Legal, Product, Engineering, and Security to align business velocity with regulatory responsibility.

  • Mentor and guide other Legal team members, embodying the high standard for excellence on our Product Counsel team.

  • Stay ahead of emerging global regulations and advise leadership on their strategic impact to HubSpot’s data architecture and platform roadmap.

  • Represent the Legal team in key stakeholder forums, championing a balanced approach to innovation, compliance, and customer trust.

Required

  • 8–10+ years advising on product/platform issues for high-growth B2B SaaS, including shipping customer-facing features on agile teams.

  • Working literacy in modern data systems—how data is ingested (batch/streaming), transformed, and stored (warehouses/lakehouses), and how ML feature stores serve models—sufficient to map data flows and translate them into privacy, security, and contractual requirements.

  • Expert command of global privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA/CPRA) and privacy-by-design; familiarity with data access/portability regimes (e.g., EU Data Act) and how they impact product and platform roadmaps.

  • Strong experience with API connections, partner integrations and developer terms.

  • Track record of balancing risk and velocity—delivering clear, actionable, time-boxed guidance aligned to sprint/launch gates.

  • Exceptional communicator with engineers and PMs; can turn legal/technical complexity into clear recommendations.

  • JD (or foreign equivalent) and active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.

Nice-to-Have Qualifications

  • Certifications such as CIPP or CIPM.

  • Understanding of security and compliance frameworks (SOC 2, ISO 27001).

  • Experience supporting AI- or data-driven product development at scale.

Where You’ll Work

  • Location: United States (Remote)

  • Work Type: Fully remote

  • Travel/Shift: Minimal travel required for team and cross-functional meetings
