About the Team:

Over 25 million people use Goodnotes every month to take notes, sketch ideas, and bring their thoughts to life. We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead our Toolbar Team, which builds some of the most heavily used user interfaces in the Goodnotes editing experience. This is a hands-on leadership role where you will act as both the engineering manager and the technical lead, guiding a small team while remaining deeply involved in technical design and implementation. If you care deeply about creating user-friendly, visually polished UIs and enjoy building alongside a small team whose work has a big impact on millions of users, we’d love to hear from you. What you will do:

  • Lead and support a small team of engineers, providing technical guidance, people management and mentorship.

  • Act as the technical lead, driving architecture, design decisions, and implementation of complex user interfaces.

  • Build and evolve toolbars and editing controls that are central to the document editing workflow in Goodnotes.

  • Develop high-quality UI components using native Apple UI frameworks (UIKit or SwiftUI for iOS, and AppKit for macOS) and web technologies (React and TypeScript).

  • Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other engineering leaders on design, planning, and prioritization.

  • Maintain a high bar for usability, visual quality, performance, and code maintainability across platforms.

  • Share your product and technical expertise with the team and help elevate our overall UI craftsmanship.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Experience leading people and small engineering teams.

  • Deep experience building complex user interfaces, either:

    • Native iOS or macOS UIs using UIKit, SwiftUI, or AppKit, or

    • Web UIs using React and TypeScript.

  • Strong product sense, with a clear focus on usability, visual polish, and end-user experience.

  • Maker at heart, with a track record of delivering high-quality features hands-on.

  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.

  • Ability to develop people and scale team capability through clear expectations, feedback, coaching, and a positive performance culture.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience developing user interfaces across both native Apple platforms and the web.

  • Experience acting as both an engineering manager and a technical lead.

  • Experience building multi-platform applications.

  • Experience working on highly visible, frequently used product surfaces.

At Goodnotes, we aim to build a team as diverse as our user base. Even if you don’t meet all the above requirements, you may still be a great fit for the role, so please consider applying. If you’re passionate about building beautiful, user-friendly interfaces, care deeply about product quality, and enjoy leading small teams with big impact, we would love to hear from you! Interview Process:

  • Call with the Recruiter to discuss your experience and goals

  • Technical interview, live coding exercises with an Engineer

  • Hiring Manager call, to discuss your experience and requirements of the role

  • Panel interview, a short presentation and behavioural questions around the goodnotes company values

  • AI Literacy, a discussion around your understanding and use of AI tools

What’s in it for you:

  • Remote friendly

  • Flexible working hours and location

  • Medical insurance for you and your dependents

  • Great annual leave allowance

  • Meaningful equity in a profitable tech start-up

  • Budget for things like noise cancelling headphones, setting up your home office, personal development, professional training, and health & wellness

  • Sponsored visits to our Hong Kong or London office every 2 years
