The Role
As our first Engineering Manager in Colombia, you will be the cornerstone of our new development team in Latin America. You will manage a team of 10 to 20 developers who may also report to tech leads in the UK or Romania. After onboarding this new team, the entire tech organisation will total about 100 people.
This is a technical role focused on building and leading an engineering team, managing daily routines, and ensuring successful project delivery.
The core responsibilities of the role are grouped into the following activities:
Delivery Management, including:
Ownership for the rituals of your team's chosen delivery lifecycle (e.g. Sprint Planning, Stand-Ups, Sprint Reviews, Retrospectives, Release Coordination, Delivery Processes, Customer Launch Support). You are encouraged to develop delegates within your team to further reduce this time allocation
Partnering with Product Managers to groom backlogs, estimate future work, and Negotiate Dates with related definitions of done. You are responsible for delivery date management and related communications
Partnering with other Engineering Managers to coordinate cross-team technical activities, including leads of external teams
Ensure technical decisions align with Masabi’s standards by partnering with Principal EngineersPartnering with Technical Program Managers and external delivery managers to ensure that your delivery plan items integrate appropriately into larger programme plans
Operational excellence within the team, including triaging support issues, the incident management process and ensuring/monitoring the uptime of services
Broader partnership with key stakeholders across other areas of the organisation, including Product, Services and Launch Operations
Line Management of people in your team, including:
Regular 1:1’s, holiday approvals, and expense approvals for your team
Responsibility for the full employee life-cycle of direct reports, including interviews, input into the performance review process, personal and professional development, role changes, etc.
Participating in Cross-Team Engineering Rituals, including:
Report work delivery progress and participate in the periodic project review meetings
Providing operational metrics data (e.g. via dashboards) and participating in operational excellence reviews, as well as in multi-team or department meetings as required (e.g., Scrum-of-Scrums, Planning)
The decision authorities for this role include agreeing to defined hiring processes for your candidates, recommendations for hiring decisions, control over allocations of resource time for your team’s operational excellence and personal development activities, as well as sign-off for any local budgets for operational expenses, training or team entertainment (if applicable).
Required experience
A good command of English
Background in software development, having been a senior developer in at least one team in the past
Have worked on a SaaS platform in a product company (delivering a software product to end users outside of the business)
Extensive experience with Java applications
Managed teams of 10+ developers in an Agile environment
Full responsibility for delivery and outcomes for your department in previous roles
Experience in startup/scaleup environments
