What We Do

The Navigation team develops and operates web services powering virtually all of Mapbox’s strategic navigation initiatives in consumer, automotive, and logistics. This is a highly multidisciplinary team, with work spanning distributed systems on AWS to geospatial localization, traffic telemetry, and mapping.

What You'll Do

  • Understand deeply the strengths and gaps of the engineering team, work with leaders to maximize the team’s output

  • Provide strategic direction and innovation in the design and implementation of the guidance suite of capabilities

  • Manage and develop the team through hiring, retaining, mentoring, and continually building the team’s capabilities

  • Drive company, product, and team objectives, carrying your team along in the decision-making

  • Work closely with product to figure out what our customers need, and develop a strategic plan to address their pain

  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, inclusion and data-driven decisions on the team

  • Help your team members and direct reports learn new skills, either through your own guidance or by proactively finding them mentors

  • Develop the long-term business strategy and drive the team’s work product

What We Believe are Important Traits for This Role

  • Located in Eastern Standard Time

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience leading and mentoring a medium sized team across multiple time zones

  • Experience driving projects towards deadlines

  • Experience designing large scale distributed systems

  • Depth in multiple software languages applied to systems and scripting

  • Experience leading code reviews

  • Experience building with Cloud Infra, AWS preferred

  • Knowledge around Linux-based operating systems

  • Believer in making data-driven decisions

  • Comfortable giving (and receiving) critical feedback

  • Strong emotional intelligence and consensus building skills are a must

Our annual base compensation for this role ranges from $198,000 - $269,100 for most US locations and 5% to 10% higher for US locations with a higher cost of labor. Job level and actual compensation will be decided based on factors including, but not limited to, individual qualifications objectively assessed during the interview process (including skills and prior relevant experience, potential impact, and scope of role), market demands, and specific work location.
