Data Science Manager - Risk

The Risk pillar builds the guardrails that ensure our creators get paid and our attendees find amazing events. We ensure great experiences happen reliably and without unnecessary risks even as Eventbrite launches innovative features and expands into new markets across the world. Keeping ahead of fraudsters requires a balance of proactivity and reactivity with the agility to switch focus when necessary. Our data scientists are central to the automation that keeps threats to our payment platform and our users without our creators or consumers noticing by designing low profile, high precision, AI- and ML-driven solutions to the ever-changing landscape of threats.
THE TEAM
The Risk pillar is a high-performing, multi-disciplinary technical development collection of teams that includes data analysts, data scientists, product managers, and engineers. We work together toward the common goal of making Eventbrite the trusted marketplace for live experiences. We collaborate with product teams across the companies to control payment, content publication, and account security risks. Working in an ever-changing threat landscape, we are vigilant for emerging problems. We strive to build solutions through collaboration, building for flexibility, while staying focused on innovative solutions to these complex problems.
THE ROLE
You will manage a team of data scientists and analysts that designs and deploys machine learning solutions, designs the rules that help us respond quickly to issues that arise, and develops reliable data sources that measure our success through business impact. Your team’s scope spans a wide variety of marketplace features including transaction monitoring, account security, and multiple modes of spam detection and content moderation. You will leverage your familiarity with classic approaches or learn new ones to develop practical, durable solutions to trust issues including both real-time and offline applications. You will design monitoring and feedback loops to confirm that our solutions remain reliable as the platform develops and our adversaries change tactics. As the team’s manager, you will identify opportunities to improve team operation through technical recommendations and process improvements.
THE SKILL SET
Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills including facilitation skills involving the whole team in group based decision making · Fluency with machine learning algorithms and AI solutions including deploying and monitoring in a real-time production environment, rapid prototyping, and experimentation
Ability to lead the design of sources of truth, navigate data processing dependencies and drive toward improved reliability and reduced time to insight and decision
Strong experience with data processing and machine learning using a python-based stack (>4 years)
Excellent communicator experienced in collaborating with management in product, engineering, and operations to balance operational readiness and project workstreams
Demonstrated ability to grow and lead high-functioning, diverse technical teams through coaching, training, and career development (>2 years)
Experience working within a highly collaborative, remote-first environment, driving a team that ships code to production often.
Advanced Degree in a relevant field
BONUS POINTS
Direct experience in content moderation, fraud and spam detection or related topics
Experience with DBT, Airflow, Sagemaker ecosystem, and Tableau
· Active Eventbrite user with a passion for live events
PAY TRANSPARENCY
The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. At Eventbrite, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is listed below. You may also be eligible to participate in Eventbrite’s incentive program(s) (such as equity, annual incentive bonus and commission plans), subject to the applicable rules and restrictions.
