Underwriting Manager
Who You Are:
As Hometap’s Underwriting Manager, you’ll be a key part of the team that makes investments here at Hometap – helping to fulfill the mission of making home ownership less stressful and more accessible. Reporting to the Director of Originations, this role oversees the day-to-day work of Hometap’s underwriting team. As the owner of this function, you will be responsible for managing current and future operations of the team to hit individual, team, and company metrics. Your role will include supporting individual development, resolving escalations, identifying opportunities for improvement, and working cross functionally to build solutions.
To be successful in this role, you’ll need to be execution-oriented with exceptional attention to detail. This role will require critical thinking to assess risk as it relates to a unique product, in a constantly changing and fast-paced environment. Following existing guidelines and iterating on future versions of repeatable processes will be key to success. A great fit for the role will bring deep functional knowledge along with strong leadership, communication, and change management skills.
What you’ll do:
Oversee the operations and day-to-day management of our Underwriting team, managing to exceed daily/monthly productivity targets, accuracy in execution, excellence in customer service and adherence to guidelines
Work cross-functionally with Sales, Processing and Closing teams
Evaluate applicant information and risk against underwriting criteria to identify high-risk cases, ensure application completeness, and make informed investment recommendations
Function as first point of contact for all eligibility escalations
Address edge cases and escalations quickly to advise team on investment decisions in accordance with our risk threshold
Identify and mitigate underwriting risks, including monitoring QC error trends, and emerging risks
Coach and develop Underwriters to drive high performance in pipeline management, communication, and quality.
Ensure team members adhere to investor guidelines and Hometap procedures
Participate in recruiting, career development, and succession planning activities
Ability to proactively ideate and develop solutions, adapt quickly to changing circumstances, and propose actionable plans in response to a dynamic environment
What you bring:
5+ years experience Underwriting within the residential finance industry
2+ years experience managing a production based team
Extraordinary attention-to-detail, with strong proofreading and fact-checking skills
Ability to think critically and make decisions, specifically in nuanced areas
Comfortable working with leaders in legal and compliance to escalate potential issues
Ability to multi-task and work under pressure within a deadline-oriented environment
Experience successfully motivating, managing and developing a team
Proactive approach to daily work and ability to handle multiple responsibilities
Excellent communications skills, and the ability to work effectively cross-functionally
Strong client service skills
Bachelor’s degree, ideally in business, finance or a related field
