HubSpot is seeking a Technical Lead II to join the Data Infrastructure - Caching and Coordination Team.

About the team

The mission of the Caching and Coordination Team is to improve the performance, correctness and reliability of HubSpot’s systems by providing a curated set of golden pathways for the use of technologies such as memcached, redis, Zookeeper, Hollow, and in-memory caches.

This team owns and operates nearly three thousand memcached and Zookeeper instances, serving millions of queries per second in aggregate. The team provides these data stores on AWS through a Kubernetes control plane across multiple data centers and regions. Through supporting tools and libraries, this team also acts as an enabler throughout the engineering organization, defining, developing and advocating for pathways that engineering teams can follow to use their data stores effectively, reliably and with the highest performance.

Typical projects for this team include a range of tool and client library development as well as implementation of fundamental orchestration and deployment functionality within our suite of Kubernetes operators.

What we’re looking for

This role presents a unique opportunity for candidates to work at this scale on an emerging team. As an engineer, your role will involve designing and solving problems in large, distributed systems and developing software in Java. As a technical lead, you will also own the roadmap and strategy for these platforms, balancing competing demands across a portfolio of technologies, and crafting the platform into a true product that provides leverage for hundreds of engineers at HubSpot.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Act as a player coach leading a team of 3-5 engineers

  • Design and implement scalable backend services, libraries, tools and automation to the operation and usage of data stores

  • Collaborate with engineering teams to integrate caching and coordination technologies into their stack in a reliable manner

  • Support the uptime and reliability of database systems

  • Work in a dynamic, agile environment with a team of engineers to deliver holistic solutions that address user needs.

  • Conduct code reviews, contribute to internal tooling, and maintain high coding standards to ensure the reliability and performance of our applications.

  • Coach the team to work iteratively, experiment with new ideas, and embrace a 'startup mentality' of learning fast and adapting quickly.

  • Continuously learn and adapt to new technologies and frameworks to keep our solutions at the forefront of technological innovation.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Has extensive experience in backend platform or infrastructure development, with proficiency in Java or a willingness to learn and adapt to new programming languages.

  • Has experience offering infrastructure platforms to other engineering teams, and understands how to build infrastructure as a product.

  • Have a history of developing solutions to problems that have had an outsized impact on the organization’s business goals.

  • Thrives in a collaborative environment, demonstrating strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with teams across the organization.

  • Is innovative and entrepreneurial, with a keen interest in staying ahead of technology trends, particularly in AI and machine learning.

  • Consistently demonstrates strong ownership of projects end to end, track record of successfully rolling out infrastructure, and collaborating with multiple Engineering teams to deliver results

  • Proven ability to solve complicated technical problems and analyze trade-offs with empathy for the developers.

Bonus points for being:

  • Someone with experience developing automation or is a power user of memcached, Zookeeper, HBase, MySql, Kafka or similar data stores.

  • Interested and experienced actively supporting infrastructure at scale on Kubernetes.
