Tech Lead II - Live Chat Team - Self Service Group (Remote US) 

About the Team

The Live Chat Team is building a first-class product that empowers support teams to support their customers quickly and easily through real time conversations. It's a highly scaled product supporting millions of messages with high performance and reliability. We’re looking to continue to expand this system to build out a holistic service that can support your customers beyond just chat capabilities.

We are seeking to add a Tech Lead II to the Live Chat Backend team. This role will involve hands-on coding around 70% of your time while also offering the opportunity to develop and mentor direct reports and lead productive teams. 

The Tech Lead II will oversee a small team and provide technical guidance, product direction, and coaching to team members.

In this role, the teams you lead will: 

  • Participate in the technical execution and delivery of new features to improve time to value

  • Unify separate systems into a cohesive chat experience

  • Explore generative AI opportunities to help our customers move fast

  • Make use of industry leading 3rd party tools as well as robust home-grown infrastructure powering the HubSpot Engineering organization 

  • Build and scale a robust data infrastructure that serves the entire organization

Our services need to do a lot of work very quickly, and we rely heavily on performant technologies to help achieve these goals. We write lots of microservices, primarily with Java 11.  Our APIs are RESTful and use the Dropwizard framework. We take advantage of Kafka for processing large volumes of data.

 Key expectations: 

  • A  Tech Lead II  is a player-coach responsible for leading a small team. 

  • Recognized as high-performing engineers, identifying as makers and builders first.

  • Collaborate with Product, Design, and other Tech Leads within their team to establish relevant, compelling, and challenging goals. 

  • Actively work with other Tech Leads to address and resolve cross-team issues. 

  • Take proactive ownership of the team’s on-call health, product reliability, and overall quality.

  • Have a vested interest in the direction of the product, actively participating in decision-making rather than deferring to the PM, PD, or others.

  • Serve as active members of the team’s leadership triad, helping to co-set the team’s direction.

  • Committed to the growth of team members, enabling them to take on increasingly complex tasks.

  • Focus on cultivating Software Engineers into Senior Software Engineers and nurturing Senior Software Engineers into future Tech Leads and Staff Engineers.

  • Regularly evaluate team members' performance and provide necessary coaching, guidance, and learning opportunities to support their career growth.

We’re looking for individuals who:

  • Are a strong senior engineer with some experience leading small teams.

  • Have a passion for writing code and reading code

  • Foster an environment that encourages autonomy and psychological safety.

  • Understand the value of building a diverse team, and are champions and upstanders for Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging initiatives.

  • Enjoy mentoring and coaching other team members in a psychologically safe way, while also being open to learning from them as well.

 

Cash compensation range: 191100-305800 USD Annually

Pay & Benefits

The cash compensation below includes base salary, on-target commission for employees in eligible roles, and annual bonus targets under HubSpot’s bonus plan for eligible roles. In addition to cash compensation, some roles are eligible to participate in HubSpot’s equity plan to receive restricted stock units (RSUs). Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay. Individual compensation packages are tailored to your skills, experience, qualifications, and other job-related reasons.
