Overview:

HubSpot is on a mission to help millions of organizations grow better. The Schemas Backend Team manages all the rules for how data should be structured, making sure everything is consistent and plays nice across HubSpot's systems.

Owning business critical systems requires deep expertise and a collaborative spirit. You'll join a talented team of engineers, product managers, and designers dedicated to evolving a system that is critical to HubSpot’s success.

The Schemas Backend Team:

The Schemas Backend team manages the schema definition and validation systems that ensure data consistency across HubSpot's event-driven architecture and various data processing pipelines. They provide the backend infrastructure for schema management, including schema reviews for new types and validation of data structures across the platform. Their work ensures that data flowing through HubSpot's systems maintains proper structure and compatibility, supporting both internal development teams and customer-facing features that depend on reliable data schemas.

The Opportunity: Technical Lead II

As a Technical Lead II on the Schemas Backend team, you will be a player-coach, leading a dedicated team of approximately 3-5 engineers. You are, first and foremost, a skilled and passionate engineer who thrives on critical systems work: stabilizing infrastructure, evolving data models safely, and guiding the company through complex migrations. This role offers a unique blend of hands-on technical contribution (approximately 75% of your time) and technical leadership responsibilities (25%), where you'll guide your team in designing, developing, and maintaining high-quality, scalable, and reliable solutions.

What You'll Do:

  • Technical Excellence & Hands-on Development:

    • Own the backend systems that define and validate HubSpot’s data schemas, ensuring consistency and reliability across the platform.

    • Craft and lead towards a vision to stabilize and evolve business-critical systems, reducing brittleness and improving stability and reliability for future changes. Develop a roadmap that allows us to safely expand the types of data HubSpot can store and process.

    • Partner with product and engineering teams to design data models, APIs, and caching mechanisms that power core HubSpot experiences.

    • Drive large-scale migrations, guiding teams across the company.

  • Product & Team Leadership:

    • Collaborate closely with Product Managers, Designers, and other Technical Leads to define a compelling vision and challenging goals for your team, aligned with the needs of Data Platform.

    • Actively contribute to shaping the product direction and strategy, bringing your technical expertise and insights to the forefront.

    • Proactively own and improve your team's operational health, including on-call processes, system reliability, and overall product quality.

    • Partner with other Technical Leads to resolve cross-team dependencies and drive broader technical initiatives within the group.

  • Lead and Mentor: Guide and mentor a team of software engineers, fostering an environment of autonomy, psychological safety, and continuous learning. You'll be actively involved in their growth, helping them tackle increasingly complex challenges and develop into senior engineers, future Tech Leads, and Staff Engineers.

  • Performance & Growth: Evaluate the performance of your team members, providing constructive feedback, coaching, and identifying learning opportunities to support their career progression.

We're Looking For Someone Who:

  • Is an experienced Senior Software Engineer with a proven track record of designing and delivering complex, scalable backend systems.

  • Has prior experience leading small engineering teams or mentoring junior engineers.

  • Is a strong communicator with the ability to form and articulate a technical vision and lead others toward it.

  • Has proven experience owning and stabilizing critical systems that are essential to a company’s success.

  • Possesses depth in API design, data modeling, and caching strategies.

  • Is experienced leading company-wide migrations, with patience and persistence to see them through.

  • Is passionate about writing clean, maintainable, and well-tested code, and enjoys code reviews and technical discussions.

  • Sets a high bar for system reliability and operational excellence, with experience in managing on-call rotations and incident response for critical services.

  • Is an excellent communicator and collaborator, able to articulate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Is eager to learn and adapt, and enjoys coaching others while also being open to learning from them.
