Staff Design Engineer/Technical Lead - Design Systems
THE TEAM
Are you passionate about crafting best-in-class, scalable user interfaces, mentoring others in development best practices, and transforming design and engineering outputs and processes to be more efficient and consistent? Eventbrite is seeking a Staff Design Engineer/Technical Lead to join the Marmalade Design System team. Marmalade is how we jam together at Eventbrite, providing Britelings with tools, infrastructure, and services that enable consistent, fully accessible user experiences across a range of products.
THE ROLE
Your role will be to help build and maintain our React design system library and our brand new design token architecture as we navigate large changes to our design language and brand in 2025 and beyond. Team members are also expected to participate in the overall Marmalade ecosystem to evolve both design and engineering by working directly with product teams. This includes doing outreach about Marmalade, discovering features and improvements, and validating system quality through visual and cross-platform testing. Overall, you will have direct ownership and play a key role in ensuring Marmalade is available for consumers in a timely, stable, and scalable way.
YOU WILL
Build cool things! Our team works on a diverse and dynamic toolset that solves real problems for designers and engineers, both within the Marmalade system and in partnership with Eventbrite’s product teams.
Have meaningful ownership. You’ll make important decisions about how we build and grow and have a strong say in what we build next. Your ability to find, assess, and develop new opportunities will be essential to our team.
Lead. Help drive vision and strategy for the design system by conducting research with our internal users on a quarterly basis to influence team roadmaps and project prioritization and coaching down, across and up the organization to encourage adoption of the system and continued investment.
THE SKILLSET
Keen appreciation for design excellence and quality of design implementation in code
Expertise in the concepts behind design systems and how they are being applied in modern product development, especially as this relates to web technologies
Deep experience in CSS architecture and practices, such as pre and post-processors, cross-browser concerns, layout, current and upcoming standards, responsive design, and motion and animation. This must include knowledge of web accessibility, WAI standards, and WA testing
Deep experience with the following key technologies: React, Typescript, SCSS, CSS Modules, Style Dictionary, and Storybook
Solid knowledge of the Node.js ecosystem, especially practices for npm package development, versioning, and publishing
Experience implementing manual and/or automated testing for UI components to guarantee they meet design, localization and accessibility standards for a diverse, global audience (WCAG, a11Y, I18N, I10N)
Experience working on a fast-paced, multi-person design system with federated contributions and governance, with a focus on git and GitHub contribution workflow and in-depth peer code review
Experience working closely with designers, including a strong understanding of how to convert a design into code
Experience enhancing design and engineering collaboration through tools and processes, such as developing custom Figma plugins or similar solutions
Hands-on experience with build, test, and release methods; such as compilers, linting (Eslint), CI/CD tooling, software testing and validation techniques (Jest, React Testing Library, Chromatic, Rollup), and modern dev-ops practices
A pragmatic, collaborative, and open-minded outlook, and a high degree of comfort working in an environment with complex demands from multiple stakeholders.
